In fact, Linda seems to be mostly guilty of\u00a0taking content from another source without permission or attribution\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0186ba;\" href=\"http:\/\/techcabal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">techcabal.com<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Most recently, a certain\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter\/MrAyeDee\" target=\"_blank\">@MrAyeDee<\/a>\u00a0accused her of using tweets and images he posted and using them on her blog without permission or attribution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"color: #cc0000;\" src=\"http:\/\/techcabal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/20140915_150355-300x247.jpg\" alt=\"Linda Ikeji Range Rover\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" \/>Linda\u2019s success is phenomenal. After 8 years of blogging, she has become a poster child for digital success \u2013 a self-made woman who rose from rags to riches with the aid of determination and the internet. She recently caused a minor uproar when she celebrated her birthday by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/techcabal.com\/2014\/10\/07\/linda-ikejis-copyright-debacle\/lindaikeji.blogspot.com\/2014\/09\/yay-finally-bought-my-brand-new-2014.html\" target=\"_blank\">posting<\/a>\u00a0pictures of her brand new Range Rover . Linda is a bit of a wunderkind in the Nigerian context \u2013 a single woman who achieved success without any obvious patronage from the establishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">Yet, questions continue to trail her operations \u2013 one of the most critical being allegations of plagiarism from local and international sites. As we said earlier, the source in question in this case is an individual who tweets under the handle\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrayedee\" target=\"_blank\">@MrAyeDee<\/a>\u00a0about security affairs in Nigeria, especially on the insurgency raging in the North-East of the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">He told TechCabal that he noticed tweets and pictures being used on Linda Ikeji\u2019s blog from around the end of September. Once he noticed this, he attempted to contact Linda through the email address on her site before using\u00a0Twitter to reach out to her. He claims that the blog has used his content in between 7-8 stories, but only made\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dmca.com\/FAQ\/What-is-a-DMCA-Takedown\" target=\"_blank\">DMCA Takedown<\/a>\u00a0requests for 3. They have since been taken down. He claims that has not been able to make\u00a0any direct contact with Linda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">As the controversy raged on Twitter, Uduak Oduok, a US-based lawyer who frequently comments on entertainment issues,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/africamusiclaw.com\/cybersquatting-wait-a-minute-is-the-man-who-accused-linda-ikeji-of-copyright-infringement-owner-of-lindaikeji-net\/\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0that the owner of the domain on @MrAyeDee\u2019s Twitter profile \u2013<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/15past8.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">15past8.com<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0also owns\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/lindaikeji.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">LindaIkeji.net<\/a>, suggesting that the two had a history and that perhaps, Alexander\u00a0was guilty of domain squatting and perhaps to trying to extort Ms Ikeji.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">Our investigation revealed that indeed, the domains were owned by the same person \u2013 Emmanuel Efremov. Alexander confirmed that his company \u2013 15 Past 8 Media \u2013 had acquired the LindaIkeji.net domain name, but he was not privy to the details of his company\u2019s\u00a0domain operations. He however insisted that they acquired the domain for Linda and have made no money from it since registration. Our search confirmed that the domain has redirected to Linda\u2019s blog practically since registration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\"><em>We have reached out to Linda Ikeji for comment but have yet to reach her.\u00a0 We will update this story as soon as we get a response.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">\n<h3 style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">Is Using Tweets in a Story Plagiarism?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">One of the questions that has bugged me the most is whether it\u2019s illegal to utilize another person\u2019s tweets in a story.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure the answer to that question is \u201cyes\u201d.\u00a0 Here\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/parmyolson\/2011\/05\/02\/man-inadvertently-live-tweets-osama-bin-laden-raid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2011\/05\/01\/live-tweet-bin-laden-raid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mashable<\/a>using tweets and pictures from a user\u2019s Twitter account to explain a story about the Osama Bin Laden raid.\u00a0 Some have argued that the proper way to use tweets is to use the embed function (that\u2019s what we use on TechCabal) but even Forbes sometimes uses screenshots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">\n<h3 style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">What Next for Linda?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">So where does that leave one of Nigeria\u2019s biggest content businesses? Linda Ikeji has obviously been a victim of her success. She has built a remarkable audience and generated lots of value as a result, proving that digital content is a viable business. As a result, she\u2019s got the attention of the public \u2013 scrutiny was inevitable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">Linda\u2019s business model is predicated on ridiculously low overheads\u00a0\u2013 she keeps a lean staff and ensures that her content acquisition costs are low.\u00a0 It is inconceivable that these attacks will reduce \u2013 and Linda might have to invest in building her content creation team, thereby thinning her margins in the long run.\u00a0 She might also have to invest in acquiring her domains \u2013 which are owned by a bunch of people from Jonathan Santos (LindaIkeji.com), Tosin Odunfa (LindaIkeji.ng), Twinpine Advertising (LindaIkeji.mobi) and 15 Past 8 Media (LindaIkeji.net).\u00a0 Hosting a site that some estimate delivers 500,000 page views a day will also not be cheap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">But Linda is not a stupid person by any stretch of the imagination.\u00a0 She\u2019s navigated the digital media landscape rather astutely, and private conversations have shown that, as long as she hasn\u2019t lost her edge, she should be able to leverage this crisis to take her business to the next level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444; text-align: justify;\">courtesy\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0186ba;\" href=\"http:\/\/techcabal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">techcabal.com<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s most successful blogger, Linda Ikeji, is under fire.
