Politics and all else remotely<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">related to it are now having a free run. Since ours is a country where<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">realpolitik for the next election begins as early as the birth of a new<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">term; you shouldn\u2019t be surprise seeing politics take the centre stage<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">barely four months to the polls. All the preps which have been in the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">works since 2011 are now relentlessly unleashed on us by politicians. At<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the now, we are steadily being treated to all their guile and pretentions,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not forgetting the magic they usually vow to do us should we give them our<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ballots.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is actually a time when we get to see the industry in our supposed<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">indolent political office holders and their collaborators. No, you can\u2019t<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hear about them holidaying in a time like this. Those among them with<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ailments more dire than the ones for which they would have jetted out to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the best hospitals in the world, would at this time remain in the country<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to treat same here.\u00a0 Their peers who could not help but be hospitalized<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">abroad at the moment keep reassuring us the improvements they are<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">recording and how they would soon return to be with us. Who knows? This<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">may be the reason we always hear of politicians collapsing in the middle<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of electioneering campaigns and rallies.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is basically about the people, at this moment. So they go all out;<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sacrificing their health and wellbeing just to secure our mandate. This<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">speaks to how rewarding and attractive our political offices are. They<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">simply sacrifice themselves for the office which avails them the power to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sacrifice us for themselves. Their office of interest is paradoxically one<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that hands its occupant the power of life and death; an office that<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">extricates one and his unborn generation from the grip of poverty. How<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">they love to serve! But we all know that the said service is such that<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sees them servicing themselves and a few cronies.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their new-found diligence is just to one end: win over to their side<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">voters who would allow them the opportunity of offering this corrupt form<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of service. They send foot-soldiers when their pretentions and current<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">preoccupations wouldn\u2019t allow them to physically take up the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">responsibility. Of course, the errand-boys are always within reach. Some<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of them are so eager to do the job that they wouldn\u2019t mind allowing the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">actual job for which they are being paid by taxpayers to suffer while they<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">take up the role of what the Igbo would call Otinkpu. Yet, what is at the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">heart of their advocacy for a particular candidate remains to sway support<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for their principal who is expected to handsomely reward them with juicy<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">political offices. That\u2019s essentially Nigeria\u2019s version of democracy where<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the people are made to matter now only to be made to suffer once the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">elections are done with. A corruption of democracy, if you like!<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They treat us with much indulgence in order to steal the most prized<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">possession democracy hands us \u2013 our votes. They shamelessly come to woo<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the same people whose lot they have not helped to better all these while.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now the chickens have come home to roast, necessitating pleas for<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">endorsements, new sets of promises, parleys, supply of stomach-structures<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or what have you to be thrown up. Again, the sole intent remains: make the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">electorates look past earlier broken promises into believing the new<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">irresistible ones we have churned out. What a simpleton they think of us!<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With all sense of propriety, it appears no other section of the country<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have taken in this lie like those of the South-Eastern extraction. But<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">then, they may have elected to be gullible since they just can\u2019t seem to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">assert themselves and what they want in a hawkish Nigeria. This part of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the country appears to be the first power-hungry leaders turn to whenever<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">they want to continue in office. It is a common knowledge that Ifeanyi<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Uba, Udenta Udenta, Peter Obi are the masquerades behind the irritating<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TAN. Without going too far into history, we can take instances from the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Abacha\u2019s, Obasanjo\u2019s and now Jonathan\u2019s quest to continue as president.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those who were always at the heart of the campaigns for these leaders<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">continuity are mostly from the South East. Yet, it isn\u2019t as if the zone<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">benefited the most from these governments.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is against this backdrop that I was heartened when I learnt of Igbo<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">leaders in Lagos turning down the request of a pro-Jonathan team who had<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">come to lure them into supporting the re-election bid of President<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Goodluck Jonathan. Not even the fact that those who came for the advocacy<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were their kinsmen could make the Ndigbo leaders of thought buckle to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">their mission. They resisted and tried to, at least, stand their ground<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">before the setting up of a committee saved the day. Don\u2019t worry we are<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">getting there. I\u2019m talking of the time when Ndigbo would stand by their<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">conviction and not even concede to the setting up of any committee to get<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">them to change their mind.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It bears clarifying that it isn\u2019t as if this writer is anti-Jonathan. The<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">president can go ahead to win his much-cherished re-election for all yours<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sincerely cares. What is at issue is that one who has betrayed the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">confidence you reposed in him or her should spare you the torture of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">returning to you to ask you to trust him or her one more time. It even<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">becomes more humiliating when the person in question sends your kin to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">come and woo the same you for him; reminds me of Absalom. Check out those<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">carried the gospel: Anyim Pius Anyim, said to be representing Jonathan,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; Deputy Speaker, House of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senator Hope Uzodinma; Minister of Labour<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and Productivity, Emeka Wogu; National Publicity Secretary of the PDP,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Olisa Metuh, Ifeanyi Ubah and Peter Obi.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The pro-Jonathan team did come to meet with Igbo leaders amongst whom were<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Enwo- Igariwey;<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">president of Ndigbo Lagos, Prof. Anya O. Anya; president of Aka Ikenga,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chief Goddy Uwazurike; former chairman of Diamond Bank, Paschal Dozie;<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">former military administrator of Lagos, Admiral Ndubisi Kanu (rtd); former<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">president, Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Dr. Raymond Obieri; Eze Ndigbo<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of Ikeja, Eze Uche Dimgba and president of Ohanaeze Lagos, Fabian<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Onwughalu.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These men who qualify to be protagonists of today\u2019s essay refused to be<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cowed notwithstanding the highly-placed nature of Jonathan\u2019s emissaries.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their insistence on not guaranteeing Jonathan their votes and those of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">their followers made the parley which began by 8pm to linger till the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">early hours of the next day. These men held that it was unreasonable for<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ndigbo to work for the president again going by what is on ground.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of these issues on ground include the fact the much hyped Second<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Niger Bridge is under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">meaning it would be tolled on completion for about 25 years, whereas a<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">similar project in Benue State is being funded by the Federal Government<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and would not be tolled. They also whined about the Jonathan\u2019s government<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lack of commitment in creating a sixth state for the south east, even as<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">they corrected that the so-called Enugu International Airport, which the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jonathan campaigners are mouthing as part of his achievements was approved<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">by the late President Umaru Yar\u2019Adua and not Jonathan.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Igbo leaders raised a lot more issues which space will not permit the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">listing of all their dissatisfactions with the Jonathan\u2019s candidacy as far<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as 2015 presidential election is concerned. It was even reported that<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNdigbo in Lagos are considering changing camp and we will soon meet with<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tinubu and Buhari on the way forward because we have lost it in the PDP.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is gratifying that the Igbo leaders are beginning to do what they<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">should have been doing all this while. Had it been the zone was this<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reluctant in making available their bloc vote to presidential aspirants<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">who had court them when elections are around the corner, its people would<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">surely have got a better deal out of the Nigerian state. Bearing in mind<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the calculations being made by the major political parties regarding next<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">year\u2019s presidential election, the South East zone seems to be the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">beautiful bride.
