\nLagos; 14-10-2014: Former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon,
\nGroup Managing Director and CEO of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc,
\nPhillips Oduoza, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina were among
\nmany other credible and distinguished Nigerians honoured yesterday at the
\nannual LEADERSHIP Annual Conference and Awards held at the ThisDay Dome,
\nAbuja.<\/p>\n
The awards had in attendance top dignitaries from all walks of life
\nincluding politicians, businessmen and members of the public.<\/p>\n
General Yakubu Gowon, who will be 80 years on Sunday, October 19, 2014
\nreceived award as the LEADERSHIP \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d in 2013 for being
\nthe voice moderation in an increasingly fractured political environment.<\/p>\n
Phillips Oduoza, the GMD\/CEO of United Bank for Africa Plc received an
\naward as Leadership \u201cBanker of the Year.\u201d In a citation at the awards, the
\norganizers said that he was being honoured \u201cfor deepening UBA\u2019s value as
\nAfrica\u2019s global bank, skillfully guiding big ticket investments that
\nsignificantly improved shareholder value while expanding the bank\u2019s
\nproduct offering and elevating customer service\u201d<\/p>\n
Also, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, the Minister of Education was named
\n\u201cLeadership Public Officer of the Year\u201d for \u201caggressively implementing
\nbold policy reforms, tackling decades of corruption in the fertiliser
\nsector and pursuing innovative agricultural investment programmes to
\nexpand opportunities for the private sector to add value to crops produced
\nin Nigeria<\/p>\n
The Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, also emerged Governor of
\nthe Year \u201cfor his vision of a state beyond oil, and for building bridges
\nof peace across one of Nigeria\u2019s most disparate communities, massively
\nbuilding and renewing infrastructure and placing the economy of Delta
\nState on solid footing\u201d<\/p>\n
The award presentation was preceded by a lecture entitled, \u201cRebuilding A
\nNation: Lessons From Other Lands\u201d, by Lagos State governor Babatunde Raji
\nFashola while the event was chaired by Vanguard publisher, Mr. Sam Amuka.<\/p>\n
Also honoured at the ceremony were; the vice chairman of Ocean Marine
\nSecurity, Mr. Olatunde Ayeni, as the Business Person of the Year, Simdul
\nShagaya (CEO Of the Year); the former minister of the FCT, Malam Nasir
\nAhmed el-Rufai, is the Author of the Year; and Super Eagles Coach, Stephen
\nKeshi, is the Sports Person of the Year. Others include Nigeria Security
\nand Civil Defence Corps (Agency of the Year), Nagari Farm Yoghurt (Product
\nof the Year), Chi Limited (Company of the Year), LAPO Micro Finance Bank
\nLtd (Micro Finance Bank of the Year), Swift Network Ltd (Telecom Company
\nof the Year), Jumia (ICT Of the Year), SAMSUNG (Brand of the Year), Ice
\nPrince (Artist of the Year) and the Golden Eaglets (Young Persons of the
