This question is of the essence. It calls for a deep<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reflection because these two men may end up as presidential candidates in<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the 2015 general election.\u00a0 What qualities do we need in a president<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">given our present<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">condition as a nation? We really need someone who has the capacity to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pull us out of economic doldrums.\u00a0 Somebody who can energize the masses<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and make us have faith in Nigeria. At the moment, Nigeria has scant<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">resemblance to anything like an emerging power. This is a country where<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">democratic institutions remain weakly rooted. God has blessed us so much<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with human and material resources that we have no business being poor.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the poverty in the land is ungodly. A vast majority of Nigerians are<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">wallowing in abject poverty and lack. We need someone who can change<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">this narrative.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 The job of a president is a potent one. The politics of it is so<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">vicious precisely because the stakes are so high. The job is not an easy<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">one so we need a man who has what it takes to govern such a complex<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">country as ours. Who is going to be the potent architect of a new<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nigeria? Who is going to be our transformational leader? A<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">transformational leader has to be sure of what he wants to happen and<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">extraordinarily strong-willed in seeing that it does. For the sake of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">clarification, leaders are not always in the right.\u00a0 Students of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">history will recall that Winston Churchill was just as clear in his mind<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and just as strong willed when he was wrong about the Indian Empire Act<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the retention of Edward VIII on the throne of England as when he<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was fatefully so right about Hitler and the significance of radar.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Leaders that make impact are those who identify the needful and work<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">towards its realization.\u00a0 There is a very big difference between what is<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">desirable and what is necessary. In Nigeria today what is necessary is<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the reduction of corruption. It is a cancer that has eaten into the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">vitals of the nation. It is either we reduce it or the vicious cycle<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">continues. Who can fight corruption between these two men?<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 President Goodluck Jonathan is obviously a humble and amiable man.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are good qualities that a leader should have. I admire his<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">humility and simplicity a lot.\u00a0 But can our dear President confront<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">corruption? Can he do the necessary instead of the desirable? The answer<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is plain for everybody to see. Jonathan does not have it in his makeup<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to fight corruption. He may not be corrupt but he doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">courage to stop his lieutenants from fleecing the nation.\u00a0 There is no<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">way we can make progress without confronting this monstrous evil.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fighting corruption is the necessary thing we need to do. Determining<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">what is necessary as distinct from what is desirable is a lot harder<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">than it sounds.\u00a0 Newt Gingrich has this to say: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153One of the things I<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">love to do is read the documents left behind by the historical figures<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">who one way or another shaped our world: General Eisenhower, George<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marshall, Churchill, and so on. The first thing that strikes one in all<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of their papers is how briefly and with what clarity each of these men<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was able to communicate his intentions and instructions. One<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">particularly striking document is a memo written by Eisenhower rather<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">early on in World War II, in which he sternly insisted that those<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">responsible for the conduct of the war keep in mind the distinction<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">between the necessary and the desirable. Our President is spending his<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">energy only on the desirable.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Can Musa Kwankwaso do the necessary? Does he have the firmness of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">character to confront this monster?\u00a0 The governor of Kano State has the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gift of wisdom and courage. His strength and eloquence as a role model<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the young people have won him many admirers. What he did in the area<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of stopping the sponsorship of pilgrims to Mecca is commendable. He<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regarded it as a waste of\u00a0 public fund and he went on to stop it. The<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">money that is tagged Security Vote he has channeled into the development<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">state. To him, that money encourages corruption and theft. Kwankwaso has<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">brought sanity on Kano roads. He said: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Kano State Traffic Road<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Agency, KAROTA, was set up to restore sanity in the state. Many<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">residents of Kano fear them more than any other thing because I gave<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">them instruction to arrest anyone, no matter their position once they<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flout traffic laws. I told them also that if you arrest any commissioner<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or top government officials for contravening traffic rule and they dare<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mention my name that they should double their penalties.\u00e2\u20ac This is the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">kind of discipline that is needed in the governance of this country.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kwankwaso also revealed that he has done a lot of things to strengthen<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the government house and other places in the state and promote peace.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153All these things we have done without borrowing money. The state<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">government has done them without borrowing from within or outside<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nigeria. It is our policy not to borrow money. In fact, even the N77<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">billion we inherited as debt, we have only N20 billion outstanding.\u00e2\u20ac<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is the direction that Nigeria needs to go.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 But there is an obstacle that Kwankwaso needs to surmount if he has to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">govern this country. He has to prove to the Southern Christians that he<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">loves them. Love means so much to those of us who are Christians because<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that is the central message of our Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As one writer puts it, &#8216;Christ taught the purest and sublimest ethics<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">which throws the moral precepts and maxims of the wisest men of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">antiquity into the shade&#8217;.\u00a0 Jesus&#8217; Sermon on the Mount is the most<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">superlative teaching of human ethics ever uttered by an individual. All<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">these messages center on love. So, Christians know what love blows and<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">smells like. That is the fuel we need.
