Afenifere Renaissance Youth Congress (ARYG) has said that it is better for<\/p>\n
the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to formally declare for the
\nopposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), instead of working
\nto damage the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from within.
\nThe group, which comprises many members of the PDP in the South-west zone,
\nalso said that Obasanjo\u2019s pastime of publicly attacking President Goodluck
\nJonathan when, as a former president, he has unfettered access to the
\nPresidential Villa, was unstatesmanlike.
\nSpeaking against the backdrop of the recent attacks by Obasanjo on
\nPresident Jonathan, on behalf of the Yoruba youth group, the group leader,
\nMr Abimbola Owolabi, stated that it is difficult to believe that Obasanjo
\nis still a member of the PDP.
\nThe group wondered why Obasanjo cannot respect the provisions of the
\nConstitution of the party, especially the section that frowns at bringing
\nthe name and image of the Party to disrepute.
\nAccording to the group, \u201cObasanjo is not only denigrating the presidency,
\nthe person of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Party, which he claims
\nto be a member of by his constant lies, unwarranted attacks and
\nmischievous blackmail to portray President Jonathan as weak, corrupt and
\ndictatorial but also manifestly executing the propaganda of the APC whose
\nmembers he now hobnobs with.
\n\u201cThese days, there is a complete sync between Obasanjo\u2019s utterances and
\nthose of Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC spokesperson.
\n\u201cAfter listening to General Obasanjo\u2019s lies that President Jonathan is
\nrunning a corrupt government and incapable of dealing with the insurgency
\nproblems in the North, at the launch of the auto-biography of Retired
\nJustice Mustapha Akanbi, we have come to the conclusion that the former
\npresident does not mean well for this country and the PDP.
\n\u201cHow can Obasanjo who elevated the bribing of National Assembly members,
\nespecially during his ill-fated Third Term agenda, to a state policy
\nduring his regime point finger of guilt at President Jonathan? Or does
\nObasanjo think that Nigerians have such a short memory as to forget how he
\nnearly emptied the national treasury to the lawmakers in his desperate
\nquest for an unconstitutional third term in office?
\n\u201cThe same man (Obasanjo) who is now accusing Jonathan of working against
\ndemocracy has been the worst enemy of democracy in the country.
\n\u201cHe deployed troops to Odi and leveled an entire village without achieving
\nany meaningful results over the Niger Delta militancy only to leave the
\nmess for the late President Umaru Yar\u2019Adua and Jonathan (who was then the
\nvice president) to clear.
\n\u201cIt was Obasanjo\u2019s recklessness and complete disrespect for the rule of
\nlaw that prompted his successor to quickly adopt rule of law as the mantra
\nof his administration.\u201d
\nThe group further said that it was at a loss as to why an elder statesman
\nlike former President Obasanjo will be peddling lies as facts just to
\ndamage politically, President Jonathan and his party, the PDP.
\n\u201cWhen Obasanjo points to the collapse of education and infrastructure in
\nthe Northeast as responsible for breeding insurgency, he conveniently
\nforgets that he ruled this country for a combined period of eleven years
\nas military head of state and civilian president.
\n\u201cWhat that means is that instead of President Jonathan who is committing
\nfunds to Almajiri education, Obasanjo should be held complicit for the
\nunderdevelopment of the North,\u201d the group stated.
\nThe group therefore called on Obasanjo to move out of the PDP and pitch
\nhis tent with the APC now that he has donned the garb of an opposition
\nelement.
\nAccording to the group, \u201cObasanjo is a war General; he should be bold
\nenough to show to Nigerians his APC membership card. He is too old for
\nthis chicanery and the hide-and-seek game he is playing within the PDP.\u201d<\/p>\n
