NEWLY-ELECTED Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives
\nCongress (APC), Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is from Ilaje, in Ondo State but
\nclaimed on oath in his nomination forms that he is from Epe in Lagos
\nState.<\/p>\n
In 1981, Amboode claimed in his Joint Admission and Matriculation Board,
\nJAMB, examination form that he was from Ilaje, Ondo State<\/p>\n
Checks within security circle pointed at Wednesday as the likely day he
\nwould be taken in for questioning and possible detention over alleged
\nperjury.<\/p>\n
His current travail is from within his party, with some party members
\nbehind the petition upon which the probe would be predicated.<\/p>\n
Sunday Tribune gathered that the petition alleging perjury against Ambode
\nwas authored by Lagos APC Integrity Group, and that copies were submitted
\nto the police and the Department of State Security Service (DSS).<\/p>\n
Attached to the petition, which got to the leadership of the two security
\nbodies in Abuja last Wednesday, were documents to prove the alleged
\nperjury against the governorship candidate.<\/p>\n
The petitioners accused him of lying on oath by claiming in his Joint
\nAdmission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination form in 1981 that he
\nwas from Ilaje in Ondo State, only to claim in his APC nomination form, on
\noath again, to be from Epe in Lagos State, during the governorship primary
\ncontest.<\/p>\n
Photocopies of the said forms were attached to the petition.<\/p>\n
The former Accountant-General of Lagos State is now said to be under
\nsecurity surveillance, to forestall his escape from the country.<\/p>\n
A security source in Abuja disclosed that he would be declared wanted, if
\nhe managed to escape from the country before security agents got to him.<\/p>\n
A member of the Integrity Group disclosed that the party members behind
\nthe petition decided to be open about it so that Ambode\u2019s case would not
\nbe couched as impunity on the part of the Federal Government or harassment
\nby the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<\/p>\n
The development is seen as the continuation of the battles within the
\nparty over the selection of its governorship candidate.<\/p>\n
Ambode, backed by the party\u2019s national leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, last
\nThursday, defeated 12 others to clinch the party\u2019s ticket.<\/p>\n
Eleven defeated aspirants had kicked against the process leading to the
\nexercise and rejected the outcome.<\/p>\n
There are two cases at the Federal High Court in Lagos challenging the
\nprocess and conduct of the exercise.<\/p>\n
It is on record that Tinubu also faced alleged perjury case aftermath his
\nemergence as the governorship candidate of the defunct Alliance for
\nDemocracy (AD) in 1999.<\/p>\n
Late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, pursued the alleged
\nperjury case against him to the Supreme Court level.<\/p>\n
The apex court ruled that Tinubu, as governor, had immunity from
\ninvestigation from the Inspector-General of Police as demanded by
\nFawehinmi.<\/p>\n
The court, however, held that the police could make discreet
\ninvestigation, but it was not permitted to come in contact with the
\ngovernor in any way in the course of the probe.<\/p>\n
The governor must also not know that he was being investigated.<\/p>\n
Findings from such discreet probe, according to the apex court, could,
\nhowever, be used in prosecuting the governor after office.<\/p>\n
