Concerns were raised, last night, over the health status of the<\/p>\n
presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen.
\nMuhammadu Buhari, following his planned trip to the United States of
\nAmerican towards the end of January.<\/p>\n
Sources had told Pointblanknews.com that the retired General is allegedly
\nsuffering from prostrate Cancer but it could not be immediately confirmed
\nfrom any medical records.<\/p>\n
Online channels had last week indicated that Buhari collapsed during the
\npresidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in
\nCalabar, Cross River State.<\/p>\n
Buhari is reported to have filled an online application for the United
\nStates of America Visa to enable him travel to the country around January
\n26 for medical scrutiny.<\/p>\n
The application for the visa, it was learnt, instantly fueled speculations
\nthat Buhari had been weighed down by the strain of the campaigns which he
\nhad been undertaking in recent days, thereby requiring urgent medical
\nattention in the foreign land.<\/p>\n
His opponents argued that Buhari would not have sought to abandon his
\ncampaigns midway and travel abroad for medical attention if his health
\ncondition was not dire.<\/p>\n
They contended that the general\u2019s failing health had become a serious
\nconcern to his handlers, who have, however, quietly managed the situation
\nto avoid any damage to his candidature.
\nBut in a shift response, Buhari dismissed the claims over his health as
\nmere fabrication of lies by those afraid of his rising popularity among
\nNigerian voters.<\/p>\n
While insisting that he was hale and hearty, Buhari, through his Campaign
\nDirector of Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, asked Nigerians not
\nto be distracted by the antics of desperate and unpopular candidates who
\nwere afraid of losing in a free and fair contest. The media campaign
\ndirector dismissed as a figment of the imagination of \u201cwicked and evil
\npersons,\u201d the rumour that Buhari may be travelling to the United States
\ntowards the end of this month for medical check up.<\/p>\n
While dismissing the report as fabrications, however, he said that \u201cas a
\nprominent leader of the opposition, many interests across the globe want
\nhim (GMB) over for political and diplomatic consultations,\u201d adding that
\nthe \u201cinvitation to the US may not be unconnected to this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shehu also dismissed as fake and untenable a purported medical report from
\nthe Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital showing that Buhari had been
\ndiagnosed of prostate cancer by the institution.<\/p>\n
In a statement, he described the claim, said to have been credited to a
\n\u2018renowned source in the hospital\u2019, as disdainful, distractive,
\nmischievous, fake and fallacious.<\/p>\n
The Buhari aide said, \u201cIt (report of cancer) is untrue and condescending
\nof its exponents. I have it on good authority that GMB has not visited the
\nAhmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in the last five years. So, how
\ncan anyone say that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last October,
\nbarely three months ago?.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the highest point of political distraction, malice and mischief.
\nThe report was not only fake but unfounded. I have spoken to impeccable
\nsources at ABUTH all of whom deny the report and also claimed that the
\nletterhead used was not their regular one, and that Dr. Bala Mohammed that
\npurportedly approved the false medical report is not on the personnel list
\nof that department.\u201d Beside, Shehu said sources at ABUTH disclosed that
\n\u201cmedical report analysis only come from laboratory technologists and not
\nmedical doctors as handwritten in this particular case\u201d, stressing that
\nBuhari did not attend the hospital for cancer or any other ailment.<\/p>\n
He restated its statement of Friday that Buhari is as fit as a fiddle.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) has discredited the
\npurported report said to have emanated from the hospital to the effect
\nthat General Muhammadu Buhari is stricken with cancer,\u201d the APC
\nPresidential Campaign Organisation has said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, there is a groundswell of opposition from Nigerians in the
\nDiaspora against the candidate of Buhari in the February 14 presidential
\nelection.<\/p>\n
The opposition against the former military ruler is being championed by
\nthe United States chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization
\n(NIDO), the flagship association of Nigerians living abroad.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a press conference held at the Hilton Garden, Washington DC,
\nHon. Victor Ugho, the immediate past Vice-President of NIDO, who is the
\ncurrent President of the Georgia State chapter of the association with
\nheadquarters in Atlanta, urged the former Head of State to perish the
\nthought of becoming the next president of the country, saying that the
\nworld has moved past the likes of Buhari.<\/p>\n
Ugho regretted that Buhari has allowed himself to be pushed around by some
\npeople whom, he said, were looking for ways to cause more pains to
\nNigeria. He noted that Buhari, as Head of State, had ample opportunity to
\nturn the country around, stressing that, \u201cas a matter of sincerity, I do
\nnot think Buhari is the best candidate for Nigeria at this period in time.
\nHe was there as Head of State, what did he do?<\/p>\n
\u201cAgain, he has not told us what he is going to do differently. We need
\ncontinuity; the choice should not be based on tribal sentiment. Let him
\ntell us how he is going to fix the so-called terrible situation he has
\nidentified. We need somebody who will not bring disunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of NIDO, Mr. Ndubusi George
\ncalled on Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to think wisely and vote
\nfor the right candidate in next month\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n
Prominent Northern leaders and elders who had initially declared support
\nfor the candidacy of General Muhammadu Buhari in the February elections
\nhave started reconsidering their position, following alarms that the
\nGeneral might be suffering a serious health challenge.<\/p>\n
