As the nation inches closer to the general elections scheduled for<\/p>\n
February 14 and 28, Minister of Works, Architect Mike Onolememen has
\ncalled on Nigerians to appreciate the massive transformation in the road
\nsector under President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s administration and reward him
\nwith a second term mandate as president.
\nDescribing the road sector transformation as one of the Unique Selling
\nPoints (USPs) of the Jonathan administration, Onolememen said that the
\nadministration would build more road infrastructure and improve greatly on
\nits verifiable records of achievements in the years ahead.
\nHe said in a statement in Abuja that there were solid reasons Nigeria
\nshould vote en-masse for President Jonathan, pointing out that his
\nadministration\u2019s intervention has not only transformed \u201cour roads from
\n\u2018death traps\u2019 but also to a motoring pleasure comparable to what obtains
\nin the developed world.\u201d
\nAccording to him, \u201cmajor arterial roads have been completely
\nrehabilitated-133 no. road projects equitably distributed in the six
\ngeo-political zones awarded, 62 completed and impressive progress recorded
\non others.
\n\u201cThe transformation agenda in the road sector, aimed at linking the six
\ngeo-political zones of our country with dual carriageways and providing
\nsafer roads, is on course.\u201d
\nOnolememen stated that 25,000kms (about 70%) of federal roads are now
\nmotorable compared to 4,500kms (16%) at the inception of the Jonathan
\nadministration.
\nHe said movement of people, goods and services were now easier through the
\nfederal roads across the country, adding that this had contributed to
\nsocial wellbeing and economic growth.
\n\u201cAccidents and carnage on our roads have been significantly reduced, with
\nimproved federal roads since President Jonathan\u2019s administration, while
\ntravel times from origins to destinations have been drastically reduced,\u201d
\nhe stated.
\nThe minister added, \u201ctransport fares have been slashed across our country
\nby operators who acknowledged that \u2018the roads are now better\u2019 and cost of
\nfueling and maintenance of vehicles have also diminished, with positive
\nimpact on production costs.\u201d
\nHe listed major bridges that are being constructed to enhance economic
\ndevelopment and social integration in the country to include Second River
\nNiger Bridge in Anambra and Delta States, Loko – Oweto Bridge in Nasarawa
\nand Benue States, New Ikom Bridge in Cross Rivers State, and Bodo-Bonny
\nBridge in Rivers State.
\nHe promised that all ongoing projects shall be completed to move country
\nforward, stressing that the aim of the President Jonathan administration
\nfor embarking on the reform in the road sector is to make \u201cour roads
\nbetter and safer sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n
