I read through the Leaders section of The Economist magazine of February
\n7, 2014 and couldn’t but have a good laugh. The truth is that I saw it
\ncoming, I just did not know that it will come so soon. The Economist in
\nthat opinion column titled ” ” suggested that General Muhammadu, the
\nflag-bearer of the APC, is a better candidate; only after describing him
\nas ” a former military dictator with blood on his hands.” It also
\ndescribed the former despot a ” nasty, brutish and mercifully short,\u201d but
\nthen went ahead to suggest that such a man is the best candidate amongst
\nall the aspirants to be president of Nigeria in 2015, even after admitting
\nthe exceptional performance of the Nigerian economy under Goodluck
\nJonathan.
\nThe magazine condemned President Jonathan for not doing enough in
\nconfronting the Boko Haram menace that has claimed almost 18,000 lives and
\nfor not doing enough to tackle corruption. Just the same kind of narrative
\nyou hear from Lai Mohammed, the spokesperson for the main opposition
\nparty, the All Progressives Congress.
\nFirst, you must understand the politics. The Economist is anti- Israel.
\nThen also remember that the UN security council rejected a Palestinian
\nresolution demanding an end to Israeli occupation within three years after
\nIsrael and the US crucially intervened to persuade Nigeria to abstain from
\nvoting. So, The Economist, like some other radical supporters of
\nPalestine, consider that Nigeria is responsible for that shattering
\ndefeat.
\nIn a popular Arutz Sheva Oped “Giulio Meotti Takes on The Economist,”
\nMeotti, an Italian journalist who writes for The Wall Street Journal and
\nArutz Sheva, wrote that ” in the Middle East, The Economist has a radical
\nanti-Israel agenda.”
\nHe stated further:
\nIn 2004 The Economist hosted a debate in London on the motion \u201cThe Enemies
\nof Anti-Semitism are the New McCarthyites\u201d, meant to demonize the few
\njournalists and professors who denounced the rampant anti-Semitism in the
\nUK.
\nLast March, the week after the massacre of Fogel\u2019s family in Itamar, The
\nEconomist published a cartoon comparing Israel\u2019s construction of 400
\napartments in the \u201csettlement blocs\u201d to Qaddafi and Assad, who massacred
\ntheir own people. In the same number, The Economist denounced \u201cthe new,
\nsupremacist form of Israeli \u2018Jewishness\u2019\u201d.
\nWhile the magazine has no problem with \u201cIRA terrorists\u201d or \u201cKurdish
\nterrorists\u201d, it does not say \u201cHamas terrorists\u201d. The difference is not
\naccidental. There is a semantic and a legal distinction between branding a
\ngroup terrorist and merely charging it with terrorist acts.
\nSays The Economist: \u201cPalestine does not fit the September 11th template.
\nFor this is terrorism harnessed to a deserving cause: the independent
\nstatehood that America itself has taken pains to say it supports\u201d.
\nFinally, if you are still trying to believe what you are reading, see this:
\nThe Economist magazine endorsed General Buhari’s namesake, Muhammad Morsi
\nof the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt just a week to the Egyptian general
\nelections in 2012, because the magazine was convinced he was the one that
\ncould fight Israel.

\nBeyond any shade of doubt, The Economist has endorsed Buhari not out of
\nlove for Nigeria, but out of hate for the state of Israel.<\/p>\n
