The Federal Government has reacted to calls by Nigerians for the
\nconstitution of an Interim National Government to midwife the 2015 general
\nelections to usher in a new democratic government.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed
\nAdoke, made the position of the Nigerian Government known in a press
\nrelease on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said that while the Federal Government recognizes and appreciates the
\ninalienable right of Nigerians to freely express themselves and proffer
\nsolutions to perceived national challenges, the government is concerned
\nthat Nigerians are being unwittingly led to believe that a prescription
\nsuch as an interim national government can be adopted as viable solution
\nto the nation\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n
He refereed to the idea of an interim government as being totally alien to
\nthe constitution.<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cFor avoidance of doubt, it is pertinent to state that
\nthe framers of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999,
\ndid not envisage the constitution of interim national government to
\nsuperintend over the affairs of government.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is therefore not surprising to observe that no provision for interim
\nnational government was made in the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
He enjoined Nigerians to continue to rely on the constitution, which
\ncontains adequate provisions on how the democratic process can be
\nactivated, to elect their leaders from time to time as the contraption
\ncalled \u201cinterim national government\u201d remains alien to Nigeria\u2019s
\nconstitutional framework.<\/p>\n
He added that the arrangement should not be promoted by well-meaning
