\"people<\/a>The presidential candidate of the All Progressives\u2019 Congress
\n(APC) General Muhammadu Buhari spoke earlier today at the Royal
\nInstitute for International Affairs, Chatham House, London to a room
\npacked with British politicians, diplomats, journalists and a wide
\ncross-section of Nigerians.<\/p>\n

Former British High Commissioner to Nigeria and Chair for the event, Sir
\nRichard Gozney introduced General Buhari to the audience as \u201ca man of
\nmodesty, unusual for a Nigerian politician, and having clarity of
\nthoughts and speech.\u201d
\nHis 25-minute speech, titled Prospects for Democratic Consolidation in
\nAfrica: Nigeria’s Transition, focused on the postponed Nigerian
\nelections, the need for its credibility and transparency and its
\nimplications for democracy across Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is in our collective interests that the postponed elections should
\nhold on the rescheduled dates; that they should be free and fair; that
\ntheir outcomes should be respected by all parties; and that any form of
\nextension, under whichever guise, is unconstitutional and will not be
\ntolerated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also reassured his audience of his democratic views and of his belief
\nthat the spread of democracy around the world since the end of the Cold
\nWar has shown him that it was another path to change and a preferable
\none than military rule.
\nHe also added that democracy was not just about allowing people to
\nchoose their leaders, but that it should also deliver on the promise of
\nchoice, of freedoms, of security of lives and property, of transparency
\nand accountability, of rule of law, of good governance and of shared
\nprosperity.<\/p>\n

He reiterated his commitment to end the raging insurgency in the
\nNorth-East by defeating the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram which has
\nkilled about 13,000 people in 5 years and taken control of territory.
\n\u201cLet me assure you \u2013 if I am elected president, the world has no cause
\nto worry about Nigeria as it is currently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He concluded by taking responsibility for the events under his watch as
\nmilitary Head of State and stated that while he could not change the
\npast, he desires to change the present and the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say without sounding defensive that dictatorship goes with
\nmilitary rule, though some might be less dictatorial than others. I take
\nresponsibility for whatever happened under my watch. I cannot change the
\npast. But I can change the present and the future. So before you is a
\nformer military ruler and a converted democrat who is ready to operate
\nunder democratic norms and is subjecting himself to the rigours of
\ndemocratic elections for the fourth time.\u201d<\/p>\n
