The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan yesterday gave reasons why\u00a0President Goodluck Jonathan deserves to be reelected for a second term.<\/p>\n
The First Lady who was in Ikom, Cross River State, in continuation of the\u00a0Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, nationwide Women rally to solicit votes for\u00a0her husband, said President Jonathan has performed well to earn a second\u00a0term in office.<\/p>\n
Speaking shortly after commissioning the 6,000 seating capacity ultra\u00a0modern Ikom Township Stadium, Mrs Jonathan said: “I came to thank you for\u00a0keeping to your promise in 2011 to vote for my husband. And I want to use\u00a0this opportunity to appeal to you to repeat the same thing in the March 28\u00a0presidential election.”<\/p>\n
According to the First Lady, her husband, during his first tenure has\u00a0performed tremendously and has impacted positively on the people especialy\u00a0women.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Jonathan reminded the over mammoth crowd of female politicians that\u00a0in 2011, her husband promised to give women 35 percent appointment in line\u00a0with the affirmative action which he did through political and electice\u00a0offices, adding that “Now we are in 2015, and he will do more for the\u00a0nation and women in particular.”<\/p>\n
She listed the progress made by the PDP-led federal government to include\u00a0improvement in health care delivery where infant mortality rate has dropped\u00a0drastically, establishment of federal universities in all the 36 states of
\nthe federation, instituted developmental programmes to empower women and\u00a0youth and the construction of 125 Amajiri schools to take kids off the\u00a0street and give them hope for the future.<\/p>\n
Others include improvement in transportation system and energy sector\u00a0while the country’s participation in sporting competitions has improved\u00a0significantly on the continent and at the global arena and Nollywood,\u00a0which she said has been brought to international recognition.<\/p>\n
The First Lady therefore enjoined the women not to be cajoled by those who\u00a0claimed to be agents of change because when they were in office, they did\u00a0not implement the change they are canvassing now.<\/p>\n
According to her, “Those promising you change did not recognise nor regard\u00a0women when they were in office and it is better you follow a man who has\u00a0promised to do more for the nation and sworn to keep it.<\/p>\n
Continuing, she said: “You have two options, either President Jonathan or\u00a0nothing,” adding that “I am confident that the women, youth and all\u00a0eligible voters in Cross River will vote for Jonathan and all PDP\u00a0candidates in March 28 and April 11 elections.”<\/p>\n
Also speaking, Cross River State Governor Senator Liyel Imoke said: “There\u00a0are only two options for Nigerians to choose, that is either they vote\u00a0Goodluck Jonathan and move forward with his transformation initiatives or\u00a0follow the opponent and be dragged 30 years backward.”<\/p>\n
Imoke disclosed that President Jonathan has in his first term established and\u00a0initiated developmental programmes as well as empowered women, stressing\u00a0that, “What President Goodluck has done, no president has done so in the\u00a0history of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Women, for the first time have been given opportunity to participate in\u00a0politics and be voted into offices.<\/p>\n
“We the youth and women in Cross River wil support President Goodluck\u00a0Jonathan and all PDP candidates.”<\/p>\n
Cross River State PDP standard bearer, Prof Ben Ayade said the state has\u00a0chosen to follow the man who will lead them into the future and that only\u00a0Jonathan who has promised to link the state capital with a fast rail line\u00a0is the only man they will follow.<\/p>\n
