\n

It was the famous Jamaican singer, song writer, musician and guitarist,\u00a0NestaRobert Marley, popularly known as \u2018Bob Marley\u2019,\u00a0that openly advocated for justice instead of peace. The implication of this advocacy, which stands as a global phenomenon, must have been\u00a0covertly\u00a0and overtly appreciated by the founding fathers of\u00a0Abia\u00a0State who, in their philosophical comprehension and projection, agreed with the Jamaican\u00a0Regae\u00a0Maestro that no society can achieve peace and\u00a0progress\u00a0in an atmosphere of injustice and\u00a0inequity.<\/p>\n

It would be completely\u00a0unreasonable for any person to expect peaceful and progressive co-existence in a society where a section of it believes that her members are being marginalized and discriminated against simply\u00a0only by reason of their geo-political origin, religion, gender or any\u00a0other\u00a0socio-econo-political differences. Where such myopic segregation exists, the people so affected naturally resolve to do everything, legitimate and illegitimate, to make sure the larger society does not, in any way, enjoy peace and equanimity. A situation such as this usually ends up breeding out-laws; armed robbers, kidnappers, rapists and other hooligans who would just be desperate to break the laws\u00a0of\u00a0the land, not minding the likely enormity of the consequences of their actions.<\/p>\n

In such a situation, the society, including the parochial agents of discrimination, marginalization and injustices, becomes inundated with\u00a0different kinds of vices. Law and order break down and resource meant for social engineering, such as education, health, infrastructure and public utilities, would\u00a0be misdirected only to provide security. Investors would become afraid of the security and protection of their lives and investments and would, therefore, quit the environment, leading to capital flight.<\/p>\n

Political, traditional, religious and economic leaders from the present\u00a0Abia\u00a0state had strongly\u00a0been involved in the struggle that led to the creation of Imo\u00a0State out of the defunct East Central State on the 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0of February, 1976 by the military administration of General\u00a0Murtala\u00a0Muhammad. Before long, however, leaders from the present\u00a0Abia\u00a0State\u00a0realized that there were unjustifiable and intolerable imbalances in the conduct of the affairs of the state, especially with regards to strategic appointments in the public service. In the Spartan Spirit of the\u00a0Abia\u00a0man, notable indigenes of\u00a0Abia\u00a0State such as;<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Dr M.I.\u00a0Okpara<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Dr\u00a0Anagh\u00a0Ezeikpe<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Dr\u00a0Agbara<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0His Eminence,\u00a0Eze\u00a0(Dr) B.O.\u00a0Enweremadu<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0His Imperial Majesty,\u00a0Eze\u00a0Isaac\u00a0Ikonne<\/strong><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0His Royal Highness,\u00a0Eze\u00a0(Dr)\u00a0Roland\u00a0Asobie<\/strong><\/p>\n

7.\u00a0Chief Paul\u00a0Ogbonna\u00a0of\u00a0Asa, and others came up with the idea of having their own state.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first thing they did was to choose a nomenclature that\u00a0would be adjudged suitable and appropriate for the state of their dream. But before\u00a0the question of nomenclature, the founding fathers of\u00a0Abia\u00a0State\u00a0had intrinsically agreed withinand amongst themselves that their perceived state would be run on best globalstandard application of equity, fairness and justice. This philosophical undertone had\u00a0to be captured and reflected in the naming of the\u00a0state. The founding fathers, therefore, equitably resorted to the use of acronyms; A for\u00a0Aba, B for\u00a0Bende, I for\u00a0Isuikwuato\u00a0and A for\u00a0Afikpo\u00a0and summing it up as\u00a0Abia. By this nomenclatural\u00a0arrangement, the old\u00a0Aba\u00a0Division, the Old\u00a0Bende\u00a0Division, the\u00a0Isuikwuato\u00a0and\u00a0Afikpo\u00a0Districts were all encompassed in the name\u00a0Abia.<\/p>\n

The founding fathers went further by assembling one of the most detailed and formidable equity-inspiringly tailored\u00a0documents called \u2018Abia\u00a0Charter of Equity\u2019. The synopsis of this charter was and remains\u00a0that every geo-political Zone or segment in the state, when created, would not be marginalized in any sphere of the state administration but rather would be given adequate sense of belonging. The\u00a0Abia\u00a0Charter of\u00a0Equity had and still has a motto;\u00a0Onye\u00a0aghala\u00a0Nwanneya! This simply means\u00a0that every\u00a0Abian\u00a0was expected to see and treat his or her fellow\u00a0Abian\u00a0as either a brother or a sister and not as a stranger.<\/p>\n

As God would have it, the struggles of the founding fathers were crowned with\u00a0unquantifiable success on August, 27, 1991 when the\u00a0administration of first Nigerian\u00a0Military\u00a0President, General Ibrahim\u00a0Babangida, announced\u00a0the creationof\u00a0Abia\u00a0state.<\/p>\n

Regrettably, many heads\u00a0of government who had held sway in the state,\u00a0both\u00a0military and civil, before\u00a0Governor Theodor Orji, did not care a hoot about the\u00a0Abia\u00a0Charter of\u00a0Equity, not to talk of its implementation. The\u00a0consequences of such uncharitable neglect is\u00a0best consigned to the rusty repository of history.<\/p>\n

But in his own natural understanding and out of\u00a0his own volition, Governor Theodor Orji feels convinced that continuous suppression of a people based on ethnic or sub-ethnic consideration has all the trappings\u00a0of an explosively injurious aftermath and has, therefore, resolved to be guided by the spirit and dictates of the\u00a0Abia\u00a0Charter of Equity.<\/p>\n

Not minding heavy pressure coming from left, right and centre, the\u00a0Governor has remained adamant in his conviction that his successor should come from the old\u00a0Aba\u00a0Division\u00a0of the state. He even deepened equity by propounding that since the state is presently constitutionally made up of three distinct senatorial districts or Zones\u00a0and that since\u00a0Abia-North had produced an executive governor that had governed for two tenures\u00a0amounting to eight years and he, coming from\u00a0Abia-Central and is on the verge of rounding off his consecutive second tenure that would amount to eight years, that equity demands that the next governor of God\u2019s own state, after him, should hail from\u00a0Abia-South Senatorial Zone.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Usman\u00a0Othman Dan\u00a0Fodio;\u00a0the Islamist Jihadist, would say, \u2018Conscience is an open wound and only truth can heal it.\u2019 Because Governor T.A. Orji stands on the solid grounds of conscience and truth, the People\u2019s Democratic Party, both at the state\u00a0and national levels,\u00a0support him. The people of\u00a0Abia\u00a0State,\u00a0especially the majority of them that have not killed their\u00a0conscience because of quest for materialism, have evidently thrown their support for Governor Orji\u2019s commitment to equity.<\/p>\n

The combined forces of God, Governor T.A. Orji, the People\u2019s Democratic Party and the electorate in\u00a0Abia\u00a0State have,\u00a0as an essential preliminary step,\u00a0positioned\u00a0Dr Victor\u00a0Okezie\u00a0Ikpeazu\u00a0for\u00a0eventual emergence as the next democratically elected Governor of\u00a0Abia\u00a0State;\u00a0the first Governor of\u00a0Ukwa\u00a0and\u00a0Ngwa\u00a0extraction in the history of Nigeria\u2019s one hundred and one years of\u00a0existence.<\/p>\n

The very populous, dynamic and ever\u00a0accommodating people of\u00a0Ukwa\u00a0and\u00a0Ngwa, nay the human community, should rise with one voice to glorify God for touching the heart of Governor T.A. Orji and the\u00a0entire\u00a0leadership of People\u2019s Democratic Party;\u00a0P.D.P, to resolve, in an unequivocal manner, to align themselves with the\u00a0course of equity,\u00a0fairness and natural justice.<\/p>\n

The P.D.P\u00a0delegates to the December 8, 2014 state congress that ended\u00a0up castingtheir votes for Dr. Victor\u00a0Okezie\u00a0Ikpeazu\u00a0as the governorship flag-bearer of the Party for 2015 general election should also be commended for choosing a man whose strength is anchored\u00a0not only on the intimidating records of his academic excellence but\u00a0equally on\u00a0humility and sensitivity to the need of his fellow human beings\u00a0and corporate existence of any contemporary society. The\u00a0Abia\u00a0electorate should see the candidacy of Dr\u00a0Ikpeazu\u00a0as a healthy\u00a0development and give\u00a0maximum\u00a0support for its realization.<\/p>\n
