The Vice President, Arc Mohammed Namadi Sambo, has said that the Federal
\nGovernment, through intervention programmes under the Tertiary Education
\nTrust Fund (TETFUND), had expended over 34 billion Naira on the provision
\nof various developmental programmes and projects on higher institutions in
\nKano State.<\/p>\n
The Vice President disclosed this on Monday in Kano State at an
\ninteractive session with members of the\u00a0 Bayero University Kano (BUK)
\ncommunity, which held during his official visit to the\u00a0 University, where
\nhe also commissioned and laid\u00a0 the foundation for various projects.<\/p>\n
Arc Sambo said that education was the bedrock for meaningful development
\nand had a pride of place on the President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
\nadministration Transformation Agenda, which he said had impacted
\npositively on the education sector in the country and Kano State in
\nparticular.<\/p>\n
The Vice President revealed that within the period 2010 to 2014 the “total
\namount expended by TETFUND for both infrastructural and academic training
\nin Kano State tertiary institutions is in the sum of N34.109bn. While
\nadding that the “total amount of investment by TETFUND across the country
\nwithin the period is in the sum of N644 billion.”<\/p>\n
Vice President Sambo, disclosing that the\u00a0 intervention was felt by both
\nfederal and State government owned institutions in the State, mentioning
\nthem to include BUK, Federal College of Education Kano, Police Academy,
\nWudil, Federal College of\u00a0 Education Technology, Bichi, Kano State
\nUniversity of Technology, North West University and Kano State
\nPolytechnic, as well as Sa’adatu Rimi College of Eduction.<\/p>\n
Vice\u00a0 President Sambo stated that the giant strides achieved was not only
\nin the education sector alone but also in the power, transport, security,
\nanti-corruption drive, agriculture, industrialization and other
\nsocio-economic programmes.<\/p>\n
Arc Sambo assured the University community of President Jonathan’s
\ncommitment and determination to deliver free and fair elections, while
\nalso debunking the rumour of the removal from office of the INEC chairman,
\nProf. Atahiru Jega, saying it was the fabrication of mischief makers.<\/p>\n
Answering questions on security, he narrated\u00a0 the giant strides Nigeria
\nhad achieved in tacking all security concerns particularly the insurgency
\nin the north-east, thanking Nigeria’s neigbours, sister African countries
\nand the international community for their support, calling on all
\nNigerians to support and partner government to tackle terrorism.<\/p>\n
In their separate remarks the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim
\nShekarau and the Pro Chancellor of BUK, Alhaji Mahamud Yayale Ahmed
\ncommended the Federal Government for their\u00a0 achievement in the education
\nsector, particularly regarding Government’s policy of increased access and
\nquality education.<\/p>\n
Speaking the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Abubakar
\nAdamu Rashid, expressed the gratitude of the university community for the
\nVice President’s visit, also expressing delight with the unprecedented
\nsupport given to the institution by the Federal Government under President
\nJonathan.<\/p>\n
Speaking further he stated that the eight projects and the foundation
\nlaying of four new ones performed but the Vice President were part of the
\nnumerous development works which were being financed by the Federal
\nGovernment under the TETFUND.<\/p>\n
The Vice Chancellor, noted that the university had introduced new degree
\nprogrammes to support Federal Government’s policy on expanding access to
\nhigher education and promoting Nigeria’s transition to knowledge based
\neconomy.<\/p>\n
Some of the TETFUND projects commissioned by the Vice President included,
\nthe Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu Stadium, named after the PDP national chairman,
\nthe faculty of education building, Department of anatomy building and also
\nthe department of Physiology building.<\/p>\n
Others were the new multipurpose teaching hospital laboratory, and also a
\n360 bed female hostel. Also included were two Centres at the Aminu Kano
\nTeaching Hospital, that of the Centre for Advance Medical Research and
\nInfectious Diseases.<\/p>\n
He also laid the foundation for the International Conference Centre being
