By\u00a0<\/span>Chuks<\/span>\u00a0N.\u00a0<\/span>Nwagbara<\/span><\/p>\n

In a few weeks hence,\u00a0on May 29, 2015<\/a>; the curtain will be drawn on the administration of His Excellency, Chief T. A. Orji,\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo<\/span>, as the governor of\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>\u00a0State when\u00a0<\/span>his\u00a0<\/span>successor\u00a0<\/span>will<\/span>be s<\/span>imultaneously sworn-in. It is, therefore, time<\/span>\u00a0to stop short, take stock and\u00a0<\/span>undertake<\/span>\u00a0a critical look at the eight-year rule of the Third Executive Governor of\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>\u00a0State<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The foray of this thorough-bred public servant, Theodore\u00a0<\/span>Ahamefule<\/span>\u00a0Orji, into politics in 2006 when he exchanged the starchy formal attire of the civil servant for the flowing garb of the politicos to contest for governorship of the state was<\/span>\u00a0perhaps in response to the\u00a0<\/span>exhortation<\/span>\u00a0of France\u2019s foremost military and political leader of the last century, Charles de Gaulle, that \u201cPolitics is too serious a matter to be left to politicians<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0And against\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0odds<\/span>\u00a0and even whilst in incarceration<\/span>, he emerged as the state governor in 2007. And in the three years\u00a0<\/span>that followed,\u00a0<\/span>Theodore Orji,\u00a0<\/span>went through the crucible of interminable litigation and the unconscionable vice-like grip of a grasping god-father whose appetite for rent seeking needed to be curbed for the state to make\u00a0<\/span>any\u00a0<\/span>meaningful\u00a0<\/span>headway. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Posterity\u00a0<\/span>will caste\u00a0<\/span>His\u00a0<\/span>Excellency\u00a0<\/span>in the mould of\u00a0<\/span>a giant of mammoth achievements<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>terms of his politics and social and e<\/span>conomic policies and programmes<\/span>. Shaking off the shackles that hitherto held him and his state in virtual bondage, Governor T. A. Orji moved swiftly to re-draw the political map of\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>\u00a0State and\u00a0<\/span>weave<\/span>\u00a0such an all-embracing coalition that<\/span>\u00a0accommodated<\/span>\u00a0all sha<\/span>des of political opinion and had<\/span>\u00a0more or less banished political opposition\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having liberated his state and re-engineered its polity, T. A. Orji next turned his attention to the\u00a0<\/span>vexed\u00a0<\/span>question of\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>security, rightly realizing that economic development will hardly take\u00a0<\/span>place<\/span>\u00a0without adequate security for lives and properties.\u00a0<\/span>That was at a\u00a0<\/span>time the state had gained national notoriety as a bastion of kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes. But, in a deft move that has continued to elicit interest and studies from crime control experts around the globe, His Excellency was able to wipe out these crimes as if with a magic wand.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no doubt that just a<\/span>s fire tests and purifies gold h<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0heart of gold as governor\u00a0<\/span>been\u00a0<\/span>forged in the furnace presented by his fiery trial and tribulation in those turbulent early years of his mounting\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the saddle. That experience, more than anything else, went a long way to refine his\u00a0<\/span>persona<\/span>,<\/span>broaden his horizon\u00a0<\/span>and shape his leadership precepts. It is also responsible for his\u00a0<\/span>bridge-building<\/span>\u00a0politics and\u00a0<\/span>compassionate\u00a0<\/span>governance that have injected new meaning<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to the\u00a0<\/span>science and\u00a0<\/span>art of politics in the state; which no doubt will remain a subject of study by students of politics for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst unlike what was obtainable in the past, it is perhaps, no longer fashionable for politicians of this era to coin slogans with an -ISM suffix as the mantra to define and explain their social, political and economic credo or doctrine; it would nevertheless be perfectly in order, and indeed, needful to\u00a0<\/span>correctly\u00a0<\/span>define and situate\u00a0<\/span>OCHENDOISM<\/span>\u00a0in its proper context.\u00a0<\/span>Indeed,\u00a0<\/span>Ochendoism<\/span>\u00a0may be described as the brand of politics which is defined not by the standard creed of \u201clive and let live\u201d but by the higher canon of \u201clive and help live\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For,\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0politics is a study in the politics of the \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>engendering of\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>political\u00a0<\/span>amity that has created<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>socio-economic room for<\/span>\u00a0his peers, contemporaries and even rivals as well as the uplift of the middle class and the empowerment of the less privileged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ochendoism<\/span>\u00a0was at work in the inclusionary politics\u00a0<\/span>which ensured that\u00a0<\/span>almost every politician of note in the state is accommodated under the same umbrella,\u00a0<\/span>Ochedoism<\/span>\u00a0is alive and well in the delivery of standard government structures and facilities for the enhanced\u00a0<\/span>service\u00a0<\/span>delivery such as\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>new secretariat and other\u00a0<\/span>public\u00a0<\/span>buildings for civil servants, the courts,\u00a0<\/span>ASEPA<\/span>, new Governor\u2019s Lodge etc.\u00a0<\/span>Ochedoism<\/span>\u00a0is no mere sloganeering when we see first class heal<\/span>th facilities including cutting-<\/span>edge equipment for dialysis, eye services and reference diagnostic laboratories in the specialist hospitals in\u00a0<\/span>Umuahia<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Aba<\/span>\u00a0or the fully equipped and functional general hospitals in the urban centres or the innumerable primary health care centres that dot the length and breadth of the state. The several kilometres of completed and ongoing network of urban and rural roads bears no less a\u00a0<\/span>testimony<\/span>, amid a host of other interventions, projects and programmes such as the airport and seaport projects that are geared to explode commerce and industry and generate thousands of jobs in the state. It is now the historic responsibility of his successor and his in-coming team to continue from where\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo<\/span>\u00a0will drop the baton come\u00a0May 29th.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the close examination of the politics and policies\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>will show a deliberate political goal that has dovetailed with an articulate economic development programme<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>in turn\u00a0<\/span>has laid a solid groundwork for\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>sustainable development of the State\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0deliver a\u00a0<\/span>massive socio-economic impetus<\/span>. Surely and steadily,\u00a0<\/span>the social and physical infrastructure\u00a0<\/span>put in place<\/span>\u00a0by the\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo<\/span>\u00a0administration has vastly unshackled the state\u2019s economy and opened it up for the private sector to more robustly play its critical role of employment generation and wealth creation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Thankfully, many\u00a0<\/span>Abians<\/span>\u00a0at home and in the Diaspora as well as other Nigerians are now giving\u00a0<\/span>Ochendo<\/span>\u00a0the credit he deserves for his carefully designed and diligently pursued social agenda and economic policies<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0<\/span>fruits\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>evident\u00a0<\/span>in every sector and strata of\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>\u00a0State<\/span>. In fact, many<\/span>\u00a0discerning observers including those who do not necessarily share the same political tent with the governor admit that his administration, despite grave challenges, has largely succeeded in the process of laying a solid foundation for the emergence of a strong and vibrant\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>\u00a0State.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is perhaps in recognition of the aphorism which states that \u201cthe reward for good service is higher service\u201d or as succinctly put by Jonas Edward\u00a0<\/span>Saik<\/span>, the great American Medical Researcher and Scientist who\u00a0<\/span>gave the world<\/span>\u00a0the Polio Vaccine<\/span>,<\/span>when he remarked\u00a0<\/span>that \u201cThe reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more\u201d that his people\u00a0<\/span>prevailed upon T. A. Orji,\u00a0<\/span>Oche<\/span>ndo<\/span>, to offer himself to continue to serve them in the\u00a0<\/span>next<\/span>\u00a0dispensation on a higher national pedestal as a Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It will therefore be a thing of great joy that the electorate of\u00a0<\/span>Abia<\/span>Central Senatorial Zone, would turn out\u00a0<\/span>en masse\u00a0<\/span>and vote\u00a0<\/span>massively\u00a0<\/span>for this favourite son of the zone in the forthcoming general election of\u00a0April 28, 2015<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
