Few years ago, one of my student stood up in the middle of a lecture and asked, ‘<\/span>Sir, who owns\u00a0<\/i>Nigeria?’\u00a0<\/i>I was teaching a topic on colonialism and it could have been easy for me to answer, the British, but that wou<\/span>ld have been appropriate if only<\/span>\u00a0we were still under colonial rule. Its been decades since we exchanged the union jack\u00a0<\/span>for the green and white flag to enjoy self-government<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The question though simple to a layman, is pregnant with meanings. First, this stu<\/span>dent having a<\/span>ss<\/span>ess<\/span>ed\u00a0<\/span>the society h<\/span>e lives in, have come to question the principle of democracy, the mode of governance and the political power play in the process of winning election. He has come to doubt the overblown theory of self governance, independen<\/span>ce<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and strength of an elected polit<\/span>ical office holder.\u00a0<\/span>He sees an illusion in democracy and as a world of make believe, where twisted public perception either tru<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>false<\/span>\u00a0reign supreme. He sees the people as a pawn, played and tossed by some power brokers t<\/span>owards a selfish end.<\/span><\/p>\n

Few days\u00a0<\/span>ago, Nigeria went to the poll in an election that saw the incumbent President,\u00a0<\/span>Goodluck<\/span>\u00a0Jonathan losing the race for a return ticket to the opposition candidate, General\u00a0<\/span>Muhammadu<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Buhari<\/span>\u00a0and in an unprecedented reaction that<\/span>\u00a0shocked the world, Mr. Jonathan<\/span>\u00a0conceded defeat saving Nigeria, West Africa and by extension the entire continent from going into flames.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the emergence of General\u00a0<\/span>Buhari<\/span>, the word on the street of Nigeria now is victory. The people seems to have fou<\/span>nd hope, placing upscale level o<\/span>f trust on the war veteran to make life better as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the masses have cause to rejoice. The government of President Jonathan haven’t\u00a0<\/span>had\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>direct\u00a0<\/span>bearing\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>people\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>street.<\/span>\u00a0He has shown lackadaisical attitude to the\u00a0<\/span>safety of the people, especially<\/span>\u00a0those in the North East and only woke up from slumber at a rather time too late. His leadership ability also shows one who isn’t total in control of government, he shows traits of\u00a0<\/span>indecisiveness,<\/span>more than needed patience,\u00a0<\/span>making the electorates get bored<\/span>\u00a0of his government.<\/span><\/p>\n

But while the people continue to rejoice over what they termed ‘Our votes, counts’ it is imperative to state without holding back that the defeat of\u00a0<\/span>Goodluck<\/span>\u00a0Jonathan isn’t the victory of the electorates<\/span>. Yes, the people voted for a ma<\/span>n of their choice but the question of who\/<\/span>what<\/span>\u00a0made that man their choice remains unanswered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The need to have Mr. Jonathan out of Aso Rock became heightened on 31st August 2013 when seven Governors of the Peoples Democratic Par<\/span>ty and the former Vice President<\/span>\u00a0walked out of the party’s convention, hence forming the ‘New PDP’. It should be noted that even though the opposition parties had already merged to form the All Progressive Congress (APC) the effect of an opposition party w<\/span>asn’t so\u00a0<\/span>impactful<\/span>\u00a0until the New<\/span>\u00a0PDP joined it. For those who understand a bit about Nigeria’s presidential power play, some of the key factors that determine the mak<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0or mar<\/span>ring<\/span>\u00a0of any occupant of that position is\u00a0<\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0relationship with the ‘Five Pil<\/span>lars’ of Nigeria namely Gene<\/span>ral\u00a0<\/span>Theophilus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Danjuma<\/span>, Ibrahim\u00a0<\/span>Babangida<\/span>, Emir of\u00a0<\/span>Kano<\/span>, Olusegun Obasanjo and the Oil Mafias. Unfortunately for President Jonathan, all these individuals stood against him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some may argue that the records of General\u00a0<\/span>Buhari<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0his undoubted anti-corruption s<\/span>tand gave him the edge against the President but these individuals must ask themselves if these records were not in public domain when he contested and lost the election three times?\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for s<\/span>ixteen years has had the opportu<\/span>nity to govern the country not because it is well structured or so accepted but because the real owners of the country still controls the party. The moment these individuals lost their proxy grip, the party became a shadow o<\/span>f itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Democracy is about pu<\/span>blic perception, it is the ability to sell yourself to the electorates and make them believe\u00a0<\/span>in your plans but that’s where it starts and ends. The\u00a0<\/span>ability<\/span>\u00a0of the people to understand, accept and believe in this messages reside<\/span>s exclusively with some set of i<\/span>ndividuals.<\/span><\/p>\n

The March 28, 2015 presidential election wasn’t won in polling booths and through ballot papers but at a round table meeting where the best of wine and foods were s<\/span>erved<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

General\u00a0<\/span>Muhammadu<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Buhari<\/span>\u00a0may seem to r<\/span>epresent the desire of the elect<\/span>orates but that can only be proven with decisions he makes within the first few months of his administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a victory for democracy, it is a good step for politics but it isn’t a victory for the people\u00a0<\/span>per\u00a0<\/span>say<\/span>\u00a0but rather\u00a0<\/span>a change of garment for the ‘Fiv<\/span>e Pillars’.<\/span><\/p>\n
