Human Rights group, Center for Human Rights and Social Justice, CHRSJ, has
\ncondemned President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari for banning African
\nIndependent Television, AIT, from covering his activities, saying such
\naction smacks of some hidden agenda.<\/p>\n

The group inn a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi
\nSulaiman said the President-elect is attempting to resuscitate the
\nanti-democratic ethos in a democratic setting.<\/p>\n

The rights group however declared that General Buhari should be
\ntutored on how to conduct the act of governance in a democratic era,
\nbelieving that democracy was new in the President-Elect dictionary and
\nstrange to his nature because of his military dictatorship background,
\nstressing that the Freedom of Press is one of the ground norms of
\nentrenching democracy in the world.<\/p>\n

The group therefore urged the genuine pro-democracy Nigerians to stand
\nup to be ready to defend our current democratic experiment before the
\nanti-democratic forces returned the country back to the dark days of
\nmilitary era where freedom of expression were withdrawn through
\ndraconian decree of 1984.<\/p>\n

The Right group maintained that Buhari has goofed with the decision of
\nbanning the respected media station from covering his (Buhari) activities
\ntill further notice, describingthe banning of AIT by the President-Elect
\nas undemocratic, illegal, evil, ungodly, anti-masses and anti-development
\nwhich should not be allowed to stand in a democracy, saying that General
\nBuhari lacks moral right and constitutional justification to ban any media
\noutfit from coverage of his activities since he elected as the next
\nPresident of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for period of another four
\nyears.<\/p>\n

His words: \u201cNigeria people, particularly, the men of fourth estate of
\nrealm should be extreme careful now with this present development from
\nBuhari, the President-Elect\u00a0 so as to avoid being the first victim
\nof Buhari\u2019s government after inauguration in May 29th, 2015.Buhari
\nshould know that this is a democracy where there is no privacy for any
\npolitical leader. When Mrs. Turai Yaradua, the wife of Late President
\nYaradua, declared that She has power on her husband, Nigeria people
\ntold him that her husband, was President of Nigeria people and they
\nought to know the where about of their President, which shows that no
\nprivacy for General Muhammadu Buhari in a democratic setting again
\nuntil he finishes his term of office in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comrade Sulaiman also declared that the functional media sector of a
\ncountry was the basis where the genuine democracy rest on, urged Mr.
\nPresident-Elect to be ready to uphold the democratic ethos and values
\nand demonstrate strong\u00a0 believe\u00a0 in our\u00a0 democratic institutions by
\nseeking any redress of his(Buhari) grievances in the court of law.<\/p>\n

While commending the outgoing President of the Federal Republic of
\nNigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his political maturity and
\nsense of humility for\u00a0 allowing\u00a0 opposition as one of the ingredients
\nof genuine democracy to grow in our democratic setting and also signed
\nthe Freedom of Information Act into law for deepening of our
\ndemocratic experiment,<\/p>\n

CHRSJ boss condemned the illegal clamp down of media outfit by the
\nPresident-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari and urged him (Buhari) to do
\nthe right step by rescinding the decision immediately within the
\ntwenty-four hours(24hrs)and\u00a0 as well tender the unreserved public
\napology to the Nigeria citizens.<\/p>\n

Supporting his position with the provision of 1999 constitution as
\namended in section 22 which stated that: \u201cthe press, radio, television
\nand other agencies of mass media shall at all times be free to uphold
\nthe fundamental objectives contained in this chapter and uphold the
\nresponsibility and accountability of the government to the people.\u201dBy
\nvirtue of this provision, the constitutional powers and duties or
\nobligation of the press are to help government realize the fundamental
\nobjectives and directive principles of state policy as contained in
\nthe constitution. The media or the press is also expected to uphold
\nthe responsibility and accountability of the government to the people.<\/p>\n

In other words, the press performs a nation builder role (development
\njournalism) as well as being a watchdog of government actions or
\nactivities pertaining to governance, transparency and accountability.
\nTherefore, in a situation whereby the representatives in government
\nget intoxicated by the virtue of their power, the society expects the
\nmedia to put them back on the right track because absolute power
\ncorrupts absolutely.<\/p>\n

Rights activist also added that\u00a0 Section 39 which entrenched the
\nfreedom of expression and the Press that Every person shall be
\nentitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions
\nand to receive and impart ideas and information without interference
\nand without prejudice to the generality of subsection 1&3a&b.<\/p>\n

Sulaiman then urged General Buhari to leave above board for effective
\ngovernance of the country, saying that nobody above the 1999
\nconstitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
