NEW HAVEN, USA, May 19, 2015\/ — Minister of Finance and Coordinating
\nMinister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has received an honorary
\nDoctorate degree from Yale University (http:\/\/www.yale.edu<\/a>), one of the
\nUnited State of America\u2019s most prestigious institutions of higher
\nlearning.<\/p>\n

The Minister was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters at Yale\u2019s 2015
\nCommencement Ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut Monday.<\/p>\n

She will be only the second Nigerian in the university\u2019s 314-year history
\nto receive its highest honour after Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka who
\nreceived an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1980.<\/p>\n

Giving out the award, the President of the University Professor Peter
\nSalovey described Okonjo-Iweala as \u201ca brilliant reformer and dedicated
\npublic servant.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to state that the Minister \u201chas spearheaded efforts to
\nstabilize and grow Nigeria\u2019s economy, battling widespread government
\ncorruption and creating greater fiscal transparency and discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yale\u2019s honorary doctorate degree is seen globally as a very important honour.<\/p>\n

According to the institution \u201cthose who have received honorary degree are
\nscholars, public servants, Nobel Prize winners and heads of states.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollectively, they represent the aspirations of this institution. Yale
\nhonorary degree recipients serve as models of excellence and service to
\nour students, to our graduates, to our community and to the world,\u201d the
\ninstitution says.<\/p>\n

As Finance Minister in 2004, Okonjo-Iweala and the economic team that she
\nled helped Nigeria obtain debt relief, wiping out $30 billion of Paris
\nclub debt, leading to a tripling of the growth rates.<\/p>\n

The second time around as Finance Minister in 2011, Okonjo-Iweala has
\nfocused on building solid foundations and institutions critical for the
\nsurvival and sustenance of the economy. She bravely fought corruption in
\ngovernance with fierce dedication and unflagging energy.<\/p>\n

Okonjo-Iweala was honored alongside the Chair of the Board of Governors of
\nUS Federal Reserve System Janet Yellen, world renowned Beninoise Singer
\nand songwriter Angelique Kidjo, University Professor and founding member
\nof the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia
\nUniversity Gayatari Chakravorty Spivak, Professor and Director of the
\nStarr Center for Human Genetics at Rockefeller University Jeffrey Michael
\nFriedman, Inventors and Entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Dean Kamen, etc.<\/p>\n
