I am constrained to speak on this issue as PDP government of President\u00a0Jonathan prepares to hand over power to the incoming APC government on May\u00a029,2015.<\/p>\n
There is an urgent need for enlightenment about what electoral victory\u00a0really means to avoid misunderstanding and misapplication of victory\u00a0leading to annulment of the effect and thus surreptitious denial of\u00a0democratic dividends to the people of Nigeria as envisaged .<\/p>\n
Electoral victory is not to be equated to military conquest because it\u00a0involves leaving the opposition alive and functioning as fulfillment of its\u00a0essence. Without a functional opposition,there is no electoral victory. On\u00a0the other hand military conquest involves the elimination of the opposition\u00a0entirely to create a complete hegemony.<\/p>\n
This differentiation has become necessary because the Incoming winners\u00a0appear to misunderstand what victory means and look set to swallow all\u00a0opposition through wooing of opposition officials and structures by every\u00a0means. In the first place the rule of morals is relegated as one would do
\nin the battlefield. Without morals,democracy cannot stand. Without adhering\u00a0to natural laws,there is no rule of law which is a pillar for building\u00a0societies.<\/p>\n
I am perturbed that lies and falsehood could be employed to destabilize\u00a0stable state governments just because of the phantom fear that all must be\u00a0aligned to the same party in the centre to function. It is not true. It is\u00a0the opposition that ensures check and balance needed to keep successful\u00a0democracies going globally. If I were the incoming government I would go\u00a0all out to ensure that the present opposition is strengthened rather than\u00a0weaken them with immoral application of influence and falsehood.<\/p>\n
It is as if we have such short memories of how it worked last time around.\u00a0If you want a one party government the short comings abound. It means that\u00a0the position will soon arise within your party. Remember the so called new\u00a0PDP!<\/p>\n
A situation whereby a party will close its eyes to practices such as\u00a0happened to Elder Orubebe lately where his tweeter handle was hacked into\u00a0and used to announce his plan to defect to the opposition party only for\u00a0the announcement to turn out to be false is condemnable to say the least.\u00a0It is just one small example of immoral application of victory or rather\u00a0lack of understanding of it.<\/p>\n
I do understand the origin of this situation. Western education is such an\u00a0important ingredient of democratic practice that our decision to deny it in\u00a0this electoral process by not disqualifying un-certificated aspirants\u00a0predisposes the system to degradation of values and mass misunderstanding
\nof values. This is just the beginning. How do you understand a constitution\u00a0that you have sworn to defend when you cannot read it and have to depend on\u00a0advice? How do you define corruption when you do not understand the term?\u00a0Or do not mind the immoral means used by aides to attain power and\u00a0influence?<\/p>\n
Look at what is happening to Bayelsa State for instance. This is the home\u00a0of the leader of PDP,the out going President and he is still in power until\u00a0May ,29 2015. You want to conquer it. To annex it as a show of strength\u00a0that indeed you have got it all. But this is a stable state,the home of the\u00a0man that registered your party even when he could not have been compelled\u00a0to do so. The man who may have given you victory on a platter of gold\u00a0without challenging it. The man who may have stopped moves to disqualify\u00a0you from contesting. This is where he will have his retirement,the only\u00a0hope for a credible opposition yet you want to conquer it because perhaps\u00a0you do not understand that electoral victory is no military conquest.\u00a0Change your attitude not just your military title to help your aides change\u00a0theirs in this regard -this is the first change that I humble advice.<\/p>\n
