Except, perhaps, the President Elect, Muhammadu Buhari, there is no other
\nNigerian politician whose person has been cruelly maligned as the National
\nLeader of the\u00a0 All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
\nThere is no other politician in the current dispensation that has been such
\nan object of vicious and groundless attacks as Tinubu. Since his emergence
\nas a major pillar of progressive politics, Tinubu has had to live with many
\ncallously cooked-up stories that are clearly meant to disparage his person.
\nThe recent damning documentary that was aired by the African Independent
\nTelevision, AIT, in the run-up to the 2015 General Election is, possibly,
\nthe height of all lies and propaganda being peddled to tarnish his image.
\nTinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bashing has so much become a calling that many who never really
\nknow the man bear false tales about him; sometimes authoritatively claiming
\nto have \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcevidences\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to back up their unfounded claims. Some just hate him
\nout of vicious envy and unashamed jealousy. They couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just fathom how
\nit is possible for a Nigerian politician to tenaciously and jealously hold
\non to his political beliefs and principles in a polity where politicians
\nchange parties like they change clothes.<\/p>\n

As far as his adversaries are concerned, there is nothing good about
\nTinubu. Unfortunately, they are dead wrong. Today, many speak glowingly
\nabout how Governor Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has been able to transform Lagos
\nState. That Fashola has performed well in Lagos is an incontrovertible
\nfact. However, one\u00a0 indisputable reality that some don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just want to hear
\nor speak about is that it was Tinubu that laid the foundation of the modern
\nLagos that has so much thrived under Fashola\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s able leadership. No doubt,
\nthe eight years spent in office by Tinubu, Fashola\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s predecessor and
\nGovernor Emeritus, set the pace for the birth of this modern Lagos. The
\nTinubu administration laid a solid foundation for the new Lagos that has
\nnow become a model for good governance in Nigeria. It was Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s
\ngovernment that set up enduring institutions such as KAI, LASTMA, LASAA,
\nLAMATA, to mention just a few. This is aside putting in place a creative
\nand ingenious template that has institutionalized governance in Lagos
\nState. It was the Tinubu administration that began the systematic fixing of
\nthe State\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s infrastructure. The complete regeneration of the Lagos Island
\nCentral Business District took place under Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s watch. Many roads
\nacross the State such as Kudirat Abiola Way, Lawanson-Itire road,
\nIkotun-Ijegun road, Ikotun \u00e2\u20ac\u201cIgando road, LASU-Iyana Iba road, to mention
\njust a few, were rehabilitated and expanded by the Tinubu administration
\nwhile a comprehensive program for resuscitation of public schools in the
\nState was also put in place.<\/p>\n

Perhaps, more importantly, the Tinubu administration put the State on the
\ntrail of economic independence as it shored up its revenue base. Tinubu
\ninherited a failed economy from the Marwa administration, by the time he
\nwas leaving office in May 2007, his administration has increased the State
\nrevenue base from a meager N600 million to over N8 billion. That the
\nadministration survived the Obasanjo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s onslaught was mainly due to its rich
\nrevenue stand.\u00a0 BRF\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s performance so far is a vindication of the precise
\npolitical mast and sound aptitude for human judgment of Asiwaju Tinubu and
\nthe defunct Action Congress, AC, leadership that recommended him to
\nLagosians. It is partly because we have not been able to replicate same at
\nthe federal level that our nation has for long been at a critical
\ncrossroad. While Lagos remains politically and economically stable today,
\nsame cannot be said of the PDP led government at the centre.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, today, mischief makers and incurable Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s haters
\ndisparage this architect of the new Lagos, but mischievously celebrate the
\nLagos model of people-oriented governance put in place by the same man. Not
\nacknowledging Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s contribution to the Lagos project is impish,
\nstereotyping him with corruption is rather puckish. After they have failed
\nto pull him down politically, it has now become the past time of professed
\nTinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s haters and bashers to stigmatize him with the unproven label of a
\ncorrupt politician. These days, every prime property in choice locations in
\nLagos and other parts of the country is owned by Tinubu. Indeed, according
\nto the tale bearers, the whole of the Lagos economy is now under Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s
\ncontrol. He owns every new hotel and eatery in town. All shopping malls in
\nLagos belong to him. Tinubu has now become such a mysterious money bag that
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcowns\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 what Dangote, the popularly acclaimed African Richest Man could
\nnot
\nboast of.<\/p>\n

The truth of the matter is that a check with the Corporate Affairs
\nCommission would easily reveal that most of the business interests that are
\nbeing falsely linked with Tinubu actually have nothing to do with him.
\nCorporate organizations such as First Nation Airways Support Services Ltd
\nand Oriental Star Restaurant and Hotel Ltd widely linked with Tinubu,
\ninvestigation reveals does not have anything to do with the man. A scroll
\nthrough the lists of Directors showed that these are corporate
\norganizations with well defined profiles. The lie represented by linking
\nthese companies to him is enough to convince any rational and sensible
\nperson that, the hues and cry about the ownership of choice holdings are
\nnothing, but lies manufactured from the innermost recess of hell. If the
\nman is as corrupt as he s being tagged, it is difficult to understand how
\nnone of the anti-corruption agencies, under the control of the PDP led
\nfederal government, have not been able to pin him down to any financial
\ncrime. Being a leading opposition figure, in the past sixteen years, if the
\nman is actually as corrupt as he is being painted, he ought to have been
\nbehind bars by now.\u00a0 It is an open fact that Obasanjo and Tinubu were not
\nthe best of friends. So, if the Obasanjo government could not nail Tinubu
\non alleged corrupt tendencies, it goes to show that something is actually
\nmissing in the whole jig saw.<\/p>\n

However, there is a fact we should not ignore. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is
\nthat proverbial man with the Midas touch. He is a national brand that every
\nbusiness wants to associate with to become an instant success both in
\ngovernment and in the private sector. The belief is that the name would
\nsell their business anywhere in Lagos and beyond. A classic example is the
\nAsiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Central Business District; a public-private
\npartnership arrangement by Ibeju Lekki Local Government.<\/p>\n

It is the same principle that has defined his political leaning. In 2003,
\nwhen the Alliance for Democracy, AD, lost all its controlled states in the
\nsouth west, except for Lagos, the only attractive option for Asiwaju Tinubu
\nwas to jump ship and move to the ruling PDP. He could have made instant
\ngains. That is the natural path in African politics because playing
\nopposition politics in this clime is hazardous and unattractive. However,
\nsuch choice is for men with blatant opportunistic disposition, not Tinubu.<\/p>\n

Those that are privileged to know Tinubu are conscious of his
\nunquestionable patriotic zeal and uncommon commitment to the emancipation
\nof the downtrodden. As for those who peddle unsubstantiated falsehoods
\nagainst him, like it is often the case at weddings, the onus is on them to
\ncome up with the body of judicially acceptable proofs or shut up forever!<\/p>\n
