Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),
\nProfessor Attahiru Jega, has said that some predictions, especially in
\nsome international media organizations suggesting that the outcome of the
\nrecently concluded 2015 general elections may lead to the end of the
\ncountry, have proven to be false due to the generally free, fair, credible
\nand peaceful conduct of the elections.<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman made the comment yesterday at the Commission\u2019s
\nheadquarters in Abuja when he received a delegation led by the Ambassador
\nof Mexico in Nigeria, Marco Antonio Garcia Blanco.<\/p>\n
He said \u201cWe are indeed very happy that our elections turned out to be well
\nand to have been recognized both nationally and internationally as free,
\nfair, credible and also peaceful. Leading to the election, some
\nimpressions had been created, particularly in the international media as
\nif this may be the end of our country. Thank God it was doomsday
\nprediction which turned out to be false\u201d.<\/p>\n
Professor Jega, who was delighted by the offer to share experiences with
\nthe other countries, explained that though the 2015 elections, were not
\nperfect, they were much better than that of 2011 and admitted that there
\nwas room for improvement.<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman said:\u00a0 \u201cWe know that the election has not been perfect;
\nwe know that it was better than 2011; but there is also a lot of scope
\nfor improvement and that is why we welcome every opportunity to visit
\nother countries and to see how they do their own elections and to be able
\nto exchange ideas and to also learn good practices which we can continue
\nto adapt to our own circumstances for continuous improvement of our own
\nelectoral process\u201d.<\/p>\n
He appreciated the efforts of the Mexican High Commission in the signing
\nof a Memorandum of Understanding between both countries in sharing
\nelectoral experiences and urged that such bilateral relationship should be
\nextended to other sectors.\u00a0 \u201cYou facilitated the signing of the Memorandum
\nof Understanding which has been very useful, many of our staff have
\nbenefited by participation in some conferences.\u00a0 All these experiences
\nhave been useful and beneficial and we cherish the opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier in his remarks, Ambassador Marco Antonio Garcia Blanco had said
\nhis mission to the Commission was to \u201ctransmit congratulatory message for
\na great job that the Commission did in the last electoral process.\u201d He
\nsaid everybody recognized the key role played by the Commission in the
\nsuccesses achieved in the last electoral process.<\/p>\n
He called on the leadership of INEC to share experience with his country
\nwhich he said is very important in improving the electoral process in
\nMexico. He said: \u201cYour expertise, knowledge and wisdom will be a great
\nasset to our electoral body. With experience sharing, Mexico will benefit
\na lot\u201d.<\/p>\n
He advocated for continuous strengthening of existing bi-lateral
\nrelationship between both countries.<\/p>\n
