President Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0 has assured that his administration would
\nensure \u2018environmental justice\u2019 for sustainable growth and development of
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
The President, who was represented by Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo,
\nstated this on Friday at the Gala Night to celebrate the World Environment
\nDay 2015, which held at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja.<\/p>\n
“Our theme for the Environmental Day speaks of a crucial aspect of
\nenvironmental justice. It reminds us that our world belongs to seven
\nbillion others aside from ourselves and that their habits as people and
\npolicies as government determine whether we will treat others fairly or
\njustly,” he said.<\/p>\n
The President noted that environmental problems including flood, climate
\nchange were assuming a higher dimension, warning that If not properly
\nhandled they would have negative impact on Nigeria’s food security, saying
\n“Without tackling environmental degradation efforts towards building,
\nmodernizing and uplifting Nigeria will be jeopardized.”<\/p>\n
President Buhari, however, assured that the wind of change being witnessed
\nacross all sectors of the society, including the environmental sector
\nwould ensure sustainable growth and development, stressing that the
\nadministration would further consolidate on the Great Green Wall
\nprogramme, the renewable energy project as well as other environmental
\nfriendly programmes and projects.<\/p>\n
“On our part we will consolidate on the gains so far achieved under this
\nproject. We will provide the support needed to ensure that the wind of
\nchange that had come the way of our polity comes also to the environment
\nsector for sustainable growth and development.<\/p>\n
He therefore emphasized that, if environmental issues were properly
\nmanaged, they have the potential to support growth.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, the Head of Service of the Federation, Mr Danladi Kifasi,
\nstressed the need for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to
\ndevelop environmental regulations and procedures to ensure clean
\nenvironment in the MDAs.<\/p>\n
He stated that from 2016, award would be given to the most
\nenvironmental-friendly MDAs, urging all MDAs to put in place a sound waste
\nmanagement system, saying such system would help in reducing cost of
\ngovernance.<\/p>\n
Earlier the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs.
\nNana Fatima Mede, said the event was marked to care for the Earth. She
\ndisclosed that the Ministry had recorded appreciable gains in ensuring a
\nsafe environment in the country.\u00a0 She used the occasion to further call on
\nNigerians to imbibe an environmental friendly culture both in their homes
\nand work places.<\/p>\n
Highlights of the event was the recognition of six Nigerians for their
\ncontributions towards ensuring a safe environment. These awardees included
\nformer Minister of Defence, retired Lt. Gen. Theophilous\u00a0 Danjuma
\n(Champion for the conservation of biodiversity) and Mrs. Ajoke Mohammed,
\nPioneer Horticulturist and Environmental Conservationists.<\/p>\n
Others are Chief Philip Asiodu, President of the Nigerian Conservation
\nFoundation; Chief Giwa Bisi Rodipe, an advocate for private participation
\nin forest conservation and industrialization; Dr Newton Jibunoh, advocate
\nfor the fight against desert encroachment and Mr Olatunji Oyefuga,
\nDeveloper of environmental management technology systems.<\/p>\n
June 5 of every year has been set aside to mark the World Environmental
\nDay, while the theme for this year\u2019s World Environmental Day is; “Seven
