The European Commission said on Thursday that it is providing N4.7 billion
\nin aid to affected by the activities of Boko Haram insurgents.<\/p>\n
This is contained in a statement issued by the European Union (EU)
\nSecretariat in Abuja.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new EU funding will provide immediate support, including clean water,
\nfood, shelter, healthcare and protection to the displaced and the host
\ncommunities in the north-east of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will also provide support to Nigerian refugees in the neighbouring
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u20ac12.5 million of this funding will be used to tackle the humanitarian
\nchallenges in Nigeria, and \u20ac8.5 million to support the refugees in Niger,
\nCameroon and Chad.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis new aid comes on top of relief that the Commission is providing to
\nthe most vulnerable people affected by food insecurity and malnutrition
\nthroughout Nigeria and its neighbouring countries,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
It said the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management,
\nChristos Stylianides, was in Nigeria to assess the humanitarian
\nconsequences of the Boko Haram terror activities.<\/p>\n
The statement said Stylianides would meet with displaced persons and
\nrelief organisations and discuss how EU aid could be put to the best use
\nin spite of the difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n
Stylianides would hold meetings with government representatives and civil
\nsociety organisations.<\/p>\n
The statement quoted Stylianides as expressing his grave concern over the
\nlack of access to the victims who needed help.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore than 1.7 million people have been displaced by the terror of Boko
\nHaram.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany of them live in precarious conditions in other parts of Nigeria or
\nthe neighbouring countries where they have fled.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are stepping up our humanitarian response to the call of those in the
