Some<\/span>\u00a0South-West leaders\u00a0<\/span>are
\ncurrently biting their fingers in\u00a0<\/span>regret
\nover\u00a0voting President Muhammadu<\/span>
\nBuhari into office.<\/p>\n

The zone is particularly angry with
\nthe President, who is the leader of the
\nAll Progressives Congress, APC, for
\ntolerating the outcome of National
\nAssembly leadership election, which
\ndid not favour the region.
\nBuhari\u2019s silence according to them is a
\nserious indication that the zone, which
\nqueued behind him to ensure victory
\nat the recent polls, may benefit little or
\nnothing from the administration.
\n\u201cFor the fact that the South-West
\nplayed a key role in the emergence of
\nBuhari as the President, it is expected
\nthat they would occupy a more
\nstrategic position than the post of vice
\npresident\u201d, said one of the leaders.
\nThey argued that the National
\nAssembly leadership election, which
\neventually placed the North Central
\ngeopolitical zone as a powerful force in
\nthe country\u2019s power equation through
\nthe emergence of former Kwara
\ngovernor, Bukola Saraki, as Senate
\nPresident and Yakubu Dogara from the
\nNorth-East, has depicted the South-
\nWest as not only a weak power bloc in
\nthe equation.
\nWith the power structure now,
\nthe South-West as a region has been
\nrelegated to the background in the
\npower structure of the country.
\nSome of the leaders of the region who
\nalso participated in the last National
\nConference argue that since the South-
\nWest does not hold any substantial
\nposition in the current power structure,
\nthe region must re-strategise to assert
\nitself in the politics of the nation.
\nThey further argued that the position
\nof Vice President, which is presently
\nheld by a south westerner, does not
\nplace the region as a powerful force.
\nWhile referring to one of the speeches
\nmade by former President Goodluck
\nJonathan during the campaigns leading
\nup to the 2015 general elections,
\nNational Coordinator of Coalition
\nof Democrats for Electoral Reform,
\nCODER, Chief Ayo Opadokun, a
\nSouth-West leader, who spoke to the
\nNigerian Pilot Sunday on the current
\npower imbalance, noted that the
\nYoruba race made a great mistake by
\nnot re-electing the former President,
\nconsidering what he had in stock for
\nthe zone.
\nHe emphasised that the
\nimplementation of the National
\nConference report would elevate
\nthe standard of the zone, which is
\nthe reason people of the South-West
\nshould have queued behind Jonathan.
\n\u201cFailure to do this needful may spell
\ndoom for the zone as their trust in their
\nforged alliance with North would lead
\nto regret.
\n\u201cCertainly, as the power structure is,
\nthere is the need for the Yoruba race to
\nre-strategise on the way they would
\nreassert themselves in the country\u2019s
\npolitics and power equation,\u201d
\nOpadokun advised.
\nAlso lending his voice on the skewed
\npower structure, image maker of Pro-
\nNational Conference, Wale Okunniyi,
\nfaulted the emergence of Saraki and
\nDogara, which he described as a
\nconspiracy against the Yoruba nation
\nby some powerful forces in the APC.
\nHe stated further that it was
\nunfortunate that the South-West did
\nnot get the speakership of the House of
\nRepresentative, as the region pushed
\nforward Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
\nHe condemned Sen. Saraki and Hon.
\nDogara for not adhering strictly to
\nthe party\u2019s position, stressing that the
\nleadership of the Yoruba people need
\nto redirect their plan for the region
\nwould benefit in the current state of the
\ncountry politics.
\nOkunniyi said, \u201cWhat happened
\nat the National Assembly was a
\nconspiracy against Yoruba nation by
\nsome powerful forces in the APC.
\nAlthough, we hold the Vice President
\nposition, we lost the speakership. This
\ncalls for total re-strategising by Yoruba
\nleadership so that we can have our
\nway in this current power structure.\u201d
\nHowever, a prominent South-
\nWest leader and lawyer, Asiwaju Bisi
\nAdegbuyi, stressed that as for now the
\nYoruba race needs self-determination
\nrather than a symbolic representation.
\n\u201cYoruba race should know what they
\nwant. Yoruba made progress when Chief Obafemi Awolowo led us.
\nAlso speaking to this paper, a PDP
\nchieftain from the zone, Barrister
\nOlayinka Sanni, put the blame on the
\nselfish interest of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
\nHe said that Tinubu\u2019s selfish interest
\nwas pushing the South-West backward.
\nAccording to him, \u201cthe system of leadertakes-
\nall that Tinubu used in Lagos
\npolitics gave the undue advantage to
\nBukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as
\nSenate President and Speaker of the
\nFederal House of Representatives.
\n\u201cHe derives pleasure from cheating
\npeople in public. If they had not
\nconducted the mock election, Femi
\nGbajabiamila would have won since it
\nwould have happened at the same time
\nin both chambers,\u2019\u2019 he noted, adding that
\ngoing by the trend of things, South-West
\nmight be forced to pressurise President
\nBuhari to implement the part of the
\nrecommendation of the Confab which
\nwould be favorable to them.
\nHowever, notwithstanding the current
\nleadership positions in the National
\nAssembly, which the South-West
\ncomplains about being relegated to the
\nsecond fiddle, the zone clinched the
\nposition of Deputy Speaker
\nHon. Yusuf Lasun had in spite of the All
\nProgressives Congress endorsement of
\nhis opponent Monguno Tahir, polled 203
\nvotes to defeat Tahir, who had 153 votes.
\nMr. Lasun represents Irepodun,
\nOlorunda, Osogbo Federal Constituency
\nin Osun State.
\nBut according to analysts, with the
\nvictory of Bukola Saraki as the Senate
\nPresident and Yakubu Dogara as the
\nSpeaker of the House of Representatives,
\nthe six geopolitical zones appear to have
\nbenefitted from power sharing.
\nAll the zones, North-West, North-
\nEast, North Central, South-West, South-
\nEast and South-South are adequately
\nrepresented at the centre.
\nWhile Senator Saraki hails from Kwara
\nState, North Central zone, Rep. Dogara is
\nfrom Bauchi State, North East Nigeria.
\nThe same for Deputy Senate President,
\nIke Ekweremadu, an indigene of Enugu
\nState in the South-East zone.
\nThe Deputy Speaker of the House,
\nYusuf Lasun, is from Osun State in the
\nSouth-West.
\nPresident, Mohammed Buhari is from
\nKatsina State, North-West zone while his
\ndeputy, Yemi Osinbajo, hails from Ogun
\nState also in the South-West zone.
\nThe South-South is represented in the
\ncapacity of John Odigie Oyegun, National
\nChairman of the All Progressives\u200e
\nCongress, APC, the ruling party.<\/p>\n
