As part of its Vision to light up Africa one community at a time, and in
\nits bid to resolve the power puzzle in Africa starting with Nigeria , a

\npioneering platform for multiple deployment on fast track basis of Modular
\nMini Hydro Power solutions that could efficiently and effectively service
\nNigeria and the entire African continent energy needs within a reasonable

Speaking in London during the launch of the modular mini Hydro power
\nsolution for Africa, the Chief Executive Officer of Genesis Energy
\nCorporation, Akinwole Omoboriowo II said the modular units of this hydro
\npower engines can be deployed on fast-track basis within just six months
\nwithout the prohibitive operating costs of diesel oil or natural gas<\/p>\n
Omoboriowo explained that the modular units can be connected to small mini
\ngrid at 415V levels for direct consumption by targeted communities and or
\nconnected to the distribution network within the area of the modular hydro
\nunit installation, adding that the units also have advantages of increased
\ngenerated Kilo Watt per hour and in addition have zero negative
\nenvironmental impact, given the Pass-through water from streams or rivers
\nused to feed the modular hydro units.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn line with the vision of Genesis to light up Africa one community at a
\ntime, we have embarked on innovative means of generating Power using
\nalternative and renewable sources of Fuel with particular interest in Mini
\nHydro and Off-grid Solar Power Solutions. SHP Malthe Winje(SHP) are
\ntechnology market leaders in the manufacturing and supply of prefabricated
\nand standardised Mini Hydro Plants, and the group being one of global
\ntechnical specialist in this field has brought on board significant
\npositive upside in collaborating with Genesis to light up Africa one
\ncommunity at a time, and starting from Nigeria. This strategic initiative
\nto provide fast track sustainable mini hydro solutions to African
\ncountries will engender realistic optimism that stronger more enlightened
\nrenewable policies will emerge in and throughout Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Marc Eeckhout, Executive Director of Genesis who led the Genesis team
\nto the signing ceremony of the Strategic Partnership contract at the SHP
\nheadquarters in Norway\u00a0 said that the mini hydro plants can be set up in
\nvirtually all parts of Nigeria where qualifying streams and or rivers
\nexist, stressing that their sustainability for stand-alone utilisation in
\nseveral States, local governments and in the rural parts of Nigeria where
\nmost Nigerian resides can be justified while noting that many viable mini
\nhydro scale plants are actually \u2018\u2019run-off-river\u2019\u2019 schemes based on water
\nwheels that require significantly small amount of civil works.<\/p>\n
According to him, several rivers, water falls, qualifying streams in
\nNigeria such as Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Cross Rivers and their tributaries
\nprovide an enviable potential for the exploitation of hydro energy. This
\nis a visible alternative to the conventional buying of transformers and
\nwaiting for power from the national grid.<\/p>\n
Currently SHP are approaching the Norwegian Export Credit Agency for a
\nfinancing Solution for the deployment of this Mini Hydro Power to Nigeria
\nand Africa. Norwegian Credit provides for 85% of the total project costs
\nand the Norwegian Export Credit Agency being the largest in the World with
\ntenure of 20 years and with a very low interest rate.<\/p>\n
It is believed that this Norwegian Funding would ensure a low competitive
\ntariff due to the long period of amortization of the fund and this would
\nensure the Government counterpart funding of 15% by Federal or State
\nagencies is easily affordable.<\/p>\n
Omoboriowo said that investment in the Mini Hydro Solution would ensure
\njob creation where the locals would be trained to maintain the plant,
\nservice and operate the mini grids where it\u2019s utilised, and sell cards for
\nprepaid metering vouchers to users stressing that it would also ensure
\nincrease in agricultural production in areas it is deployed. Therefore the
\nlow tariff coming from the low cost of power solution in which farmers can
\nnow process more of their produce and more Agro Allied processing
\nindustries would be set up, thereby shifting the current subsistence
\nfarming style predominant in most part of the country.<\/p>\n
Genesis in this direction is one of the outstanding indigenous companies
\ncontinuing to make Nigeria proud\u00fd with the quality and internationalist
\ncapability of a Nigerian Organisation that operates throughout Africa.
