\nas the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, has said it has no legal mandate to do
\nso.<\/p>\n
President Buhari had said during the campaign that he would publicly
\ndeclare his assets as soon as he is sworn-in. He has failed to do so even
\nwith mounting criticism.<\/p>\n
According to Sam Saba, the Chairman of The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB),
\nhas announced that CCB has no legal mandate to publicise the assets public
\nofficers reveal to them.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday Saba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the only role
\nthe bureau has concerning public officials\u2019 assets is to make sure that
\nthey are verified after they’ve been declared.<\/p>\n
Thus, CCB has no power to publicize President Muhammadu Buhari’s assets.<\/p>\n
Saba said, “We do not have power to make public the assets declared by the
\npresident. The CCB does not have the right to make anybody’s assets
\ndeclaration available on pages of newspaper or online.”<\/p>\n
However, Saba noted that the President himself assured he would later make
\na public declaration.<\/p>\n
“The President has in a statement through his media aide said he will make
\nhis submissions public after the bureau has verified within his first 100
\ndays in office,” he said.<\/p>\n
During his campaign Buhari made a pledge and now, 31 days after he has
\nofficially assumed office, he faces continuous criticism for not yet
\nkeeping his word.<\/p>\n
Surrounded by these criticisms, Buhari maintains that he will make his
\npromised declaration after CCB completes their verification process.<\/p>\n
Saba also pinned the failure of many public officers to declare their
\nassets on the lack of comprehension of Nigeria’s constitution.<\/p>\n
He said, “my message for public office holders is to study the
\nconstitution because I think in this country, we have poor reading habits.
\nMost people come into public office in ignorance.”<\/p>\n
Saba also alluded to the way public officers refuse to acknowledge or
\nperhaps do not even know that they should not operate foreign bank
\naccounts.<\/p>\n
“I believe that if people have read all these and are aware, it will help
