A Federal Court sitting in Kano State, Nigeria\u2019s Northwest region has
\nordered a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, his two sons,
\nAminu and Mustapha, who were accused of fraud, to be remanded in Kano
\nprison till September 28.<\/p>\n
The former governor was arraigned today (Thursday) alongside his children
\nfor allegedly receiving N1.351 billion kickback from a government
\ncontractor.<\/p>\n
The presiding judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike ruled that the four accused
\npersons be remanded in a Kano prison custody because the Economic and
\nFinancial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said they lacked enough facilities to
\naccommodate them.<\/p>\n
Rejecting the pleas of defense Counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN)
\nMr. Effiong Effiong, Justice Anyadike ruled that the accused be kept at
\nEFCC custody, saying the commission had complained of inadequate
\nFacilities.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the defense Counsel, Mr. Effiong had argued that remanding the
\naccused persons in prison will amount to trampling on their fundamental
\nhuman rights.<\/p>\n
The trial for the Lamidos is fixed for September 28, for hearing.<\/p>\n
Channels Television also gathered that the court was besieged by
\nsupporters of the former governor who chanted songs in his support.<\/p>\n
The police are reported to have fired tear gas canisters into the air
\nafter an altercation ensued between supporters of the former governor and
