Indications emerged on Sunday that about 20 Civil Society Organisations
\nunder the aegis of Coalition for Civil Liberty and Equity, CCLE, have
\nconcluded plans to protest for the sack of the chairman of the Economic
\nand Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Larmode in Abuja on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
In a press statement signed by Mallam Isa Haruna of the Arewa Front for
\nNational Advancement, AFNA, and Muideen Olaniyi of the Network for
\nNational Integration, NNI, said the protest is to draw attention to the
\ncompromised nature of the EFCC under Larmode\u2019s watch.<\/p>\n
Leaders of the coalition alleged that the \u201csudden resurgence of the EFCC
\nafter a long period of hibernation and lack of direction under Mr. Ibrahim
\nLarmode amounts to grandstanding and cosmetic effort to deceive the
\npresent administration and Nigerians that the anti-graft body was
\nworking.\u201d<\/p>\n
The group warned that unless Larmode was removed, \u201cthe present witch-hunt
\nand cabal sponsored arrests and bogus charges would cast Nigeria in bad
\nlight before the international community and all men of good conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the EFCC boss is a \u201ctainted watchman given his
\npenchant for bias and culpability over pension fraud in the country. It is
\non record that Larmode was fingered by the Senate Committee on
\nEstablishment in 2013 over the conduct of biometric for pensioners in the
\nDiaspora.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was discovered that Larmode collected estacode twice for biometric
\nabroad and never went for any and refunded only one of the estacodes.
\nLarmode should also explain why he received allowances for meetings he
\nnever attended with the Pension Reform Task Team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Haruna and Olaniyi decried the manner in which the commission has
\nundertaken the arbitrary arrest of former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido and
\nhis sons, former Head of Service, Mr. Steve Orosanye and a host of other
\nNigerians, stating that if the ugly trend persists, Nigerians of good
\nintentions would be wary of serving in government.<\/p>\n
