Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has tasked oil companies to
\ncarry out more developmental projects in their host communities.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike gave the charge when he played host to the Country Chairman
\nand Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria
\n(SPDC) Mr. Osagie Okunbor and other management staff on Tuesday in
\nGovernment House, Port Harcourt.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to do things out of compulsion and out of threat, because
\nthat is not the way it is\u00a0 supposed to be\u2026I think that if we\u00a0 have a
\nrobust relationship, it is important to look inwards and see how you will
\nbe able to solve problems that are not much”to \u201d Wike noted<\/p>\n
The governor stated that\u00a0 giving priority to their corporate social
\nresponsibilities will go a long way in soothing the nerves\u00a0 of\u00a0 people and
\nat the same time provide conducive environment for them to carry out their
\noperations.<\/p>\n
The governor further challenged the multinational oil firm to include
\nindigenes in its divesting plans and sale of its onshore wells as Rivers
\nState has individuals with technical and financial capacities to acquire
\nsome of the oil wells.<\/p>\n
In addition, Governor Wike stressed the need for Shell to partner with the
\nState Government in providing infrastructure,<\/p>\n
The State Chief Executive assured his guests that government will provide
\nthe enabling environment by beefing up security to make sure that
\neverybody doing business in the state are protected, stressing that it
\nwill further encourage investors to come into the state.<\/p>\n
Assuring them of efforts to assist the federal government in tackling the
\nissue of oil theft, Wike disclosed that already plans are on top gear to
\ndeliver the two armoured surveillance helicopters purchased by the state
\ngovernment, \u201cW e believe that when they come in, Shell will partner with
\nus to see how those armoured helicopters can be utilized to check oil
\ntheft.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his speech, , Shell Managing Director lauded the governor for creating
\na conducive environment for the company to do\u00a0 business.<\/p>\n
With its headquarters located in the state, Okunbor solicited the
\nsustenance of a long standing relationship between the company and the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Lamenting the rise in oil theft, he called on the state government to
\nassist in arresting the menace and also ensure development in communities
