Persisting claims in\u00a0 the local and international media that President
\nMuhammadu Buhari has accused or indicted the United States Government of
\nhelping the terrorist group, Boko Haram are untrue and widely off mark.<\/p>\n
Reports to that effect are an unfortunate misinterpretation and distortion
\nof the President’s remarks at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP)
\nduring his highly successful official visit to Washington DC.<\/p>\n
Indeed, President Buhari made it abundantly clear in those remarks, copies
\nof which were circulated to the media, that he was convinced that the
\nUnited States could never support groups such as Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
“I know the American people cannot support any group engaged in these
\ncrimes,” the President clearly stated.<\/p>\n
The regrets expressed by\u00a0 President Buhari at USIP about the impact of the
\napplication of the Leahy Law on Nigeria’s war against\u00a0 Boko Haram and
\nterrorism cannot be construed as an indictment of President Barack\u00a0 Obama
\nand the United States Government who have publicly and privately declared
\ntheir preparedness to give the Buhari Administration the fullest possible
\nsupport and assistance.<\/p>\n
Within the context in which they were made, President Buhari’s comments on
\nthe adverse effect of the Leahy Law on Nigeria’s efforts to contain Boko
\nHaram’s\u00a0 atrocious acts of terrorism should only be taken as a passionate
\nappeal for even greater understanding and support from\u00a0 a very powerful
\nand longstanding ally.<\/p>\n
President Buhari has nothing but the highest possible regard for President
\nObama, the United States Government, the people of the United States,
\ntheir laws and institutions.<\/p>\n
The President had very successful and useful talks with President Obama,
\nVice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry, other
\nhigh-ranking US government officials and members of United States Congress
\nduring his visit to Washington DC.<\/p>\n
It is his expectation that those talks will lead to better mutual
\nunderstanding and a further deepening of bilateral relations between
\nNigeria and the United States, especially in Nigeria’s current priority
