The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after a thorough review of the <\/span>
\npolitical developments in the country since the All Progressives <\/span>
\nCongress (APC) took office at the center, alerts all Nigerians and the
\ninternational community that all is not well with the nation\u2019s <\/span>
\ndemocracy.<\/p>\n

The party said this fear is derived from the facts of some conscious
\nactions and inactions of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC
\ngovernment that undermine critical institutions of democracy, emasculate <\/span>
\nthe constitution and ostensibly set the stage for a return of
\ndictatorial regime in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on
\nSunday said despite claims of being a converted democrat, President <\/span>
\nBuhari has allowed, under his watch, an incessant violation of sections
\nof the nation\u2019s constitution, a development that has become a huge <\/span>
\nthreat to democracy and the stability of the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor instance, how can this government explain the fact that a major
\ninstitution of democracy like the Independent National Electoral
\nCommission (INEC) has been deliberately debilitated to the extent that
\nit can no longer perform its statutory responsibility for lack of
\nquorum?<\/p>\n

\u201cNigerians are aware that before his tenure expired on June 30th, the
\nformer INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega wrote to President Buhari,
\nintimating him of the fact that the tenure of majority of the national
\ncommissioners will expire before August, yet the President never acted,
\nresulting in the present crisis in the commission, where more than 80%
\nout of the statutory 13 members remain vacant, even as eleven states of
\nthe federation are also without Resident Electoral Commissioners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe note that this anomaly is in addition to the uncertainty surrounding
\nthe controversial appointment of an Acting Chairman of INEC in the
\nperson of a national commissioner whose tenure has since expired, not
\nminding that there is no provision for an acting chairman of INEC in our
\nconstitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis development has completely enervated the commission from carrying
\nout its functions as stipulated in part 1 of 3rd schedule of the 1999
\nconstitution as amended, thereby putting our electoral system under
\nsevere threat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask, if not for a possibility of an ulterior motive to inject a
\nconstitutional crisis and undermine the nation\u2019s democracy, why should
\nPresident Buhari wait to be urged before he upholds his responsibility
\nof forwarding replacements to the Senate for confirmation so as to
\nenable the commission effectively carry out its constitutional
\nresponsibilities to the nation?<\/p>\n

\u201cCould this be a ploy by the APC-led government to use a decapitated
\nINEC to conduct the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and
\nBayelsa to pave way for their planned \u2018capture\u2019 of the two PDP states?<\/p>\n

\u201cIs the weakening of INEC not part of the plot to use the commission to
\nput the PDP in precarious position in various electoral tribunals to the
\nadvantage of the APC?<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, Nigerians are witness to the undue interferences of the
\nDepartment of State Services (DSS) in the activities of election
\ntribunals in Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and other PDP states, where electoral
\nofficers are being harassed, intimidated and detained, ostensibly to
\ninfluence judgments against the PDP.<\/p>\n

\u201cAkin to these are reported cases of abuse of security agencies by the
\nAPC-led government. Of particular note is the July reprehensible sealing
\nof Rivers state local councils by the Police, who also barred members of
\ncaretaker committees, that were duly appointed by the state government
\nto take charge of the councils following the pronouncement of the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, of grave concern is the adamant stance of this administration in
\nrunning a government without the statutory components of a full cabinet
\nas prescribed by the constitution, even when the negative consequences
\nof this strange and totalitarian tendency are taking serious toll on the
\neconomy and the polity in general.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intolerance of the APC and the glaring insensitivity of this
\ngovernment, in spite of the outcries of well-meaning Nigerians against
\ntheir undemocratic leanings, raise fears about the future of our
\ndemocracy and the general health of our dear nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, how can we begin to explain the venom and disparagement
\nwith which the APC has been attacking our highly revered national
\nleaders in the National Peace Committee, which has as members, former
\nHead of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, His
\nEminence, Alhaji Sa\u2019ad Abubakar, respected clerics; Archbishop John
\nOnaiyekan and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kuka, retired justices of superior
\nrecords as well as others highly respected patriotic Nigerians, for
\ndaring to counsel Buhari\u2019s government on some observed undemocratic
\ntendencies and processes.<\/p>\n

“The crass attacks are more astonishing, considering the much
\nappreciated role these great Nigerians played in ensuring a peaceful and
\nviolence free 2015 general elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is especially as we have no reason to believe that such weighty
\nattacks from the President\u2019s party can come without his approval, more
\nso as the APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who authored the
\nstatements was not part of the meeting between the President and the
\nPeace Committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe PDP and indeed all discerning Nigerians are therefore left with no
\nother option than to conclude that there is a clear agenda to undermine
\ncritical institutions of democracy, intimidate Nigerians and pave way
\nfor dictatorship in the land.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn view of the developments, the PDP, as a party that nurtured and
\nsustained democracy in Nigeria for 16 years, beckons on all lovers of
\ndemocracy within and outside the country, to rise up to the occasion and
\nimpress it on President Buhari and his APC to imbibe, in its totality,
\nthe tenets of democracy and the rule of law in the general interest of
\nour dear nation.<\/p>\n

“In raising this alarm about disturbing national issues, we however wish
\nto reiterate our earlier position that the PDP, as a responsible and
\npatriotic political party, is not in anyway averse to the fight against
\ncorruption, as long as it is carried out within the ambits of the due
\nprocess of the law.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur nation is a state built on the principles of freedom and social
\njustice; the essentials of democracy, where \u2018sovereignty belongs to the
\npeople, from whom government, through the constitution derives all its
\npowers and authority\u2019 for the good of all, irrespective of creed, class, <\/span>
\npolitical, ethnic or gender considerations; tenets that must be <\/span>
\nprotected and upheld at all times.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, we call on some well-meaning Nigerians who have found
\nthemselves in the APC, especially, those who at one time or the other, <\/span>
\nwere pupils of the teachings and visions of the founding fathers of the
\nPDP, to rise above the shallowness of their temporary enclave and join <\/span>
\nin this major defence of democratic ethos”.<\/p>\n
