The Presidency on Sunday said the ongoing trial of the President of the
\nSenate, Sen. Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) was
\npurely judicial and constitutional issue.<\/p>\n

A statement in Abuja by the Senior Special Assistant to President
\nMuhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, described the
\nattempt to link the Presidency to the Saraki\u2019s trial as unacceptable.<\/p>\n

The statement also frowned at the views to the effect that the Code of
\nConduct Bureau (CCB) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal could only act upon
\nexternal instigation.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, there is no place in law that the Bureau and
\nthe tribunal should take instructions from any quarters.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an independent institution equal to any superior court of record, the
\ntribunal is set up by the constitution to determine the issue of default,
\nfalse declaration or forgery in assets declaration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis, therefore, is purely a judicial process and has nothing to do with
\nthe presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone has an axe to grind with what they are doing, they should do it
\nin a judicial manner by challenging those actions in a proper court of
\nlaw.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet them hire a good team of lawyers to prove their innocence.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment has no desire to persecute anybody,\u2019\u2019 the statement maintained.<\/p>\n

It stated that, \u201cPresident Buhari has vowed to respect the rule of law and
\nthis is what he is doing by staying out of this matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has said times without number that the war against corruption has no
\nsacred cows.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if the President wants to help, there is no way he can do anything.
\nIs he going to ask the judge to stop the trial?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is purely a judicial process, the type of which is routinely dealt
\nwith by the CCB and the CCT. There are many cases like this that are going
\non,\u2019\u2019 the statement maintained.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, the President has sworn to an oath to protect
