A mother of eight, Hajiya Amina Yusuf, was among the over 15,000 people displaced by the flood that ravaged five villages in Warawa Local Government Area of Kano state has cried out for help over hunger and lack of adequate care.<\/p>\n
Tiga Dam in Wudil Local Government Area, two days ago, over flown its banks causing havoc in Laraba jigawa, Katarkawa, Garundau, Wambanto and Litau villages, forcing over 15, 000 residents to flew the area.<\/p>\n
Large hectres of farm lands were also devastated by the flood that submerged the villages destroying properties and causing the death of livestock valued at several millions of Naira.<\/p>\n
According to Hajiya Amina, for two days running, the refugees were neglected as there was no food and medication to take care of them.<\/p>\n
It was only this afternoon that they brought us gari and sugar. I have about eight children with me, what can we do with three cups of gari? This is pathetic and I call on those in the authority to do something to alleviate our suffering.<\/p>\n
We did not cause the flood. We are but victims of natural disaster and that does not mean that we should not be treated as human beings. In everything, we give Allah the glory that all of us survived the flood,\u009d she said.<\/p>\n
According to the Director of Personnel in the Warawa Local Council secretariat, Alhaji Ahmed Haruna Bichi, the Council created five emergency refugee camps at Token Primary School, NALDA Secretariat, Emawa Primary School, Laraba Jigawa and Dan Hawan Giwa Primary School where the victims were camped.<\/p>\n
He explained that no death was recorded during the flood, adding that the warning by officials of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) put residents on the alert and they vacated the area before the flooding situation got worse.<\/p>\n
He said both the state and the Local Council were putting heads together to ensure that the victims were kept in good condition.<\/p>\n
We have started making plans for their resettlement. As you can see, some relief materials just arrived the camps and more efforts are being put in place to get them more provisions, particularly, food items, he stated.<\/p>\n
Some of the items already distributed to the refugees as at press time include, 60 bags of gari, 30 bags of sugar, 1300 loafs of bread and 500 bags of sachet water.<\/p>\n
