Nigerian workers on Thursday urged the National Assembly to ensure that
\nall ministerial nominees declare their asset publicly before confirmation.<\/p>\n
Among the 21 persons nominated as ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari
\nare former Lagos State governor, Raji Fashola, ex-Rivers State governor,
\nRotimi Amaechi, and spokesperson of the ruling APC, Lai Mohammed.<\/p>\n
The workers, members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, stated
\nthis in a joint statement by the union\u2019s president, Boboi , and General
\nSecretary, Musa Lawal.<\/p>\n
The TUC said that the declaration would be in the public interest.<\/p>\n
The labour union said the public declaration of asset was necessary
\nfollowing \u201cworrisome\u201d allegations of fraud against some ex-ministers and
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is need to verify the financial and material status of each nominee
\nbefore they are allowed to assume such high offices,\u201d the workers said.<\/p>\n
Although Nigerian law does not mandate public declaration of asset by
\npublic officials, President Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy, Yemi
\nOsinbajo, have both publicly declared their asset as part of the new
\nadministration\u2019s policy to entrench transparency and anti-corruption in
\ngovernance.<\/p>\n
The Senate, which has the responsibility to approve ministerial nominees
\nis not expected to heed the call of the workers as even the senators
\ndeclined to declare the asset publicly with only one member, Shehu Sani,
\ndoing so.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the TUC said time had come to allow only people with proven
\nintegrity to head government ministries and urged the Senate to screen the
\nnominees based on their integrity and past records irrespective of their
\nstatus.<\/p>\n
The congress noted that many youth in the country have gotten into crime
\ndue to unemployment caused by corrupt leaders in the past.
\n\u201cIt is sad how much shame politicians have brought upon this country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is rarely any month we do not hear news of Nigerian youths being
\nexecuted in other parts of the world due to involvement in one crime or
\nthe other.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will not be in this backward situation if the economy is doing well,
\nif we had steady power and adequate infrastructure and if successive
\ngovernments were interested in creating jobs for the army of unemployed
\nyouths,\u201d it said.
