Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has challenged President
\nMuhammadu Buhari to prosecute the Yobe State Independent National
\nElectoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Abu
\nZarma, who was alleged to have received N15 million bribe to influence
\nthe Yobe State Governorship election.<\/p>\n
The governor said it was only when that is done that the President\u2019s
\nfight against corruption can enjoy the needed credibility, adding
\nthat; \u201cIf nothing is done on a case as clear as that of the INEC REC,
\nNigerians can as well kiss President Buhari anti-corruption fight
\ngoodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a release issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications
\nand New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said it was worrisome
\nthat despite that details of the two bank accounts of the INEC REC,
\nwhich showed that N15 million was lodged into his accounts few days to
\nthe April 11 election was admitted as evidence by the Governorship
\nElection Petition Tribunal in the state, the REC has not been charged
\nto court.<\/p>\n
He said; \u201cIt is on record that two officials of Diamond Bank Plc and
\nZenith Bank Plc, tendered exhibits confirming the payment of N15
\nmillion into the REC\u2019s accounts by the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Yobe
\nState Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, Assistant Superintendent of Police,
\nZakari Deba.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ADC allegedly paid N8 million into the Diamond Bank account of
\nthe INEC REC and N7 million into his Zenith Bank accounts on April 8,
\n2015, three days before the governorship election. As at the time the
\nN8 million was paid into the Diamond Bank account, only N28, 000 was
\nin the account.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy then is the Yobe INEC REC not being tried yet? Why has he not
\nbeen charged to court?<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is
\nfoot-dragging on the arraignment of the INEC REC and the governor\u2019s
\nADC, why hasn\u2019t President Buhari directed the Police to commence the
\nprosecution?<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, in the spirit of President Buhari\u2019s fight against
\ncorruption, the Yobe State INEC REC and the ADC that paid the bribe
\ninto his bank accounts should be charged to court without further
\ndelay. This is more so that there are credible evidence(s) lending
\ncredence to the fact that the REC actually took bribe to influence the
\nYobe election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is also important so as to further sanitise the electoral system
\nfor more credible elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnything other than this will mean that the President\u2019s
\nanti-corruption fight is only against some people while others,
\nespecially those related to the President either by tribe, religion or
