{"id":42992,"date":"2015-10-17T11:37:43","date_gmt":"2015-10-17T10:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=42992"},"modified":"2015-10-17T15:05:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-17T14:05:33","slug":"ghanaian-newspaper-the-new-statesman-retracts-story-on-springfield-energy-okyere-tenders-apology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/ghanaian-newspaper-the-new-statesman-retracts-story-on-springfield-energy-okyere-tenders-apology\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghanaian Newspaper, The New Statesman Retracts Story On Springfield Energy, Okyere, Tenders Apology"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445071706113_4655\" class=\"base-card-body\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445071706113_4624\" class=\"msg-body inner  undoreset\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1445071706113_4654\" class=\"email-wrapped\">A Ghanaian newspaper, The New Statesman has retracted and apologized for a<br \/>\ndefamatory and libelous story it published on September 25, 2015, against<br \/>\nSpringfield Energy and its CEO, Mr. Kevin Okyere, where it sensationally<br \/>\ntried to link the duo to corruption in the Nigerian petroleum sector.The New Statesman, which gave wings to the defamatory report in Ghana and<br \/>\nNigeria, in a retraction published on the cover page of the October 16<br \/>\nedition and subsequently on page 2, regretted that the previous report it<br \/>\nran was inaccurate saying, \u201cApart from the fact that Springfield did<br \/>\nbusiness with the NNPC in Nigeria, The News Statesman has no evidence that<br \/>\nSpringfield\u2019s dealings with NNPC were not legitimately secured\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Springfield Energy is an oil and gas company with operations in Ghana and<br \/>\nNigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Okyere and his company had sued the newspaper and its publisher, GAB<br \/>\nProductions Limited, for GH\u00a230 million ($7.5m) for libel, at an Accra High<br \/>\nCourt on September 30.<\/p>\n<p>The duo also threatened to sue other newspapers for publishing<br \/>\nunsubstantiated reports linking them to corruption in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>It is however unclear whether the plaintiffs would discontinue the suit.<\/p>\n<p>The full text of The New Statesman\u2019s retraction reads:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRETRACTION: REPORT ON KEVIN OKYERE, SPRINGFIELD<\/p>\n<p>The new statesman wishes to retract in full its report of Friday,<br \/>\nSeptember 25, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTHE HANDSOME GHANAIAN MILLIONAIRE AND NIGERIA\u2019S BEAUTIFUL $20BN<br \/>\nEX-PETROLEUM MINISTER\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The new statesman, as its readers are fully aware, has been consistent in<br \/>\nhighlighting for its mainly Ghanaian readers efforts by the new Buhari<br \/>\ngovernment to tackle corruption in Nigeria. Much of such publications have<br \/>\nfocused on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and its former<br \/>\nMinister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of our investigations, much of which was based on reports<br \/>\nalready circulating in the Nigerian media on her controversial handling of<br \/>\nthe ministry, names were mentioned of people with alleged influence around<br \/>\nMrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke and in just two of the many numerous reports<br \/>\n(specifically The Premium Times and little known the capital) the name<br \/>\nKevin Okyere, a Ghanaian businessman, came up.<\/p>\n<p>Our checks further revealed that Kevin\u2019s company, Springfield, which is a<br \/>\nplayer in the petroleum business here in Ghana, managed to secure<br \/>\noil-lifting deals in Nigeria under the Jonathan government.<\/p>\n<p>We must however, stress that none of the publications about Kevin Okyere<br \/>\nor his company, Springfield, made any categorical allegation linking him<br \/>\nto any corrupt dealings, either in Nigeria or Ghana. And our own<br \/>\npublication did not say that Kevin Okyere or Springfield took part in any<br \/>\ncorrupt transaction in any of the two countries they are known to operate<br \/>\nin Ghana and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed our report on Kevin Okyere and Springfield went on to say that the<br \/>\nsuccessful young Ghanaian businessman became \u201can object of envy within oil<br \/>\ncircles in Nigeria\u201d, and added, \u201cmany others reduce the targeting of the<br \/>\nsuccessful Ghanaian deal-maker as one of pure envy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the fact that Springfield did business with the NNPC in<br \/>\nNigeria, the News Statesman has no evidence that Springfield\u2019s dealings<br \/>\nwith NNPC were not legitimately secured and made no such categorical claim<br \/>\nin our publication.<\/p>\n<p>We have since published a rejoinder from Springfield in which they<br \/>\ncompletely denied doing anything illegitimate in either Nigeria or Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>We are hereby rendering a full retraction and unreservedly regret any<br \/>\ninconvenience which our said publication might have caused Springfield and<br \/>\nits CEO, Kevin Okyere.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"base-card-clear\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Ghanaian newspaper, The New Statesman has retracted and apologized for a defamatory and libelous story it published on September 25, 2015, against Springfield Energy and its CEO, Mr. Kevin&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":43019,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-42992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
