The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday, took a swipe at President
\nMuhammadu Buhari, over what it described as the harmful consequences of
\nhis alleged negative statements on the economy and the general image of
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa
\nMetuh said the President\u2019s unwary statements have become very serious clog
\nin the wheel of progress, eroding the confidence of both domestic and
\ninternational investors in the Nigerian economic and social system.<\/p>\n
The party said: \u201cIt is worrisome that in the last six months, the
\nPresident, instead of making efforts to harness resources and grow the
\neconomy, has rather continued to apply himself, perhaps unwittingly, to
\ndemarketing the nation and scaring away investors through negative
\nlabeling of Nigerians and unwarranted unhealthy portrayal of the nation\u2019s
\neconomy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the last six months, our President has only succeeded in discouraging
\nforeign investors with his continued misrepresentation of our country as a
\nbusiness unfriendly environment, where most of the citizens are basically
\ncorrupt, dishonest, and cannot be trusted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhereas we have restated our total support for the war against
\ncorruption, we insist that Mr. President\u2019s unceasing blanket negative
\nlabeling of citizens, in a country where millions of honest and
\nhardworking individuals\/firms are genuinely contributing daily to the
\ndevelopment effort, is indeed a disservice and injurious to the nation and
\nthe people.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurthermore, Mr. President\u2019s recent announcement to the world that the
\nnation, with its abundant human and natural resources, is broke and cannot
\npay cabinet ministers not only sends a discouraging signal to the domestic
\nand international business community, but also exposes the ineptitude of
\nthe present administration to meaningfully and sincerely exert itself and
\nwork with industrious and innovative investors to create and manage
\nwealth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe ask; how can any reasonable investor still have the confidence to
\ninvest in a country where the President himself continues to alert that
\nhis country reeks of corrupt people and that the government is broke to
\nthe extent it cannot pay cabinet ministers?<\/p>\n
\u201cIs the President not directly advising investors against having
\nconfidence in Nigeria and the system, and that they risk not being paid
\nfor jobs awarded by government at any level?<\/p>\n
\u201cMore worrisome is the fact that Mr. President most times, makes his
\ndamaging comments in international fora with potential investors in
\nattendance to the extent that reminds one of the proverbial father who, in
\nthe presence of potential suitors, often portrays his daughters as wayward
\nand yet constantly complain of their inability to find husbands.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed, this is not the way to go, Nigeria is a country blessed with
\nabundant human and natural resources. What we need at the moment is a
\nserious, innovative and practical approach with the capacity to harness
\nthe resources and create wealth for the benefit of all, instead of an
\napparently laidback scapegoat tactics with outworn excuses and unhelpful
\ncomments.<\/p>\n
\u201cMay we remind Mr. President that even in the darkest period of our
\neconomic challenges, successive administrations made efforts in steadying
\nthe economy, while always reassuring our citizens and the international
\ncommunity of the strength and economic potentials of our great nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that in the desperation to cover its apparent lack of economic
\nplan, this administration has positioned cabinet ministers, upon
\ninauguration to concentrate on diversionary blame game on the past PDP
\nadministration. But even this political deceit cannot combat the
\nunpalatable consequences of Mr. President\u2019s damaging utterances on the
\nimage of the nation and its economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cFinally, we wish to remind the President and those around him that
\nNigerians, by the 2015 elections, have committed the fate of the country
\nin his hands for the next four years and are not willing to accept excuses
