Former United States President Jimmy Carter has poured encomiums on
\nNigeria\u2019s former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, describing him
\nas a symbol of democracy on the African continent.<\/p>\n

Carter, the 39th US President, stated this while receiving Jonathan
\nyesterday at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum located
\nat the Carter Center in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

The two former Presidents held a fruitful meeting at the carter
\nCenter where they held a wide-ranging discussion on global issues and
\nshared views on how to promote peace, democracy and good governance in
\nAfrica and the world.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Jonathan\u2019s time in office, Carter said: \u201cPresident
\nGoodluck Jonathan is the symbol of democracy in action. You set an
\nexample that others African leaders should follow.”<\/p>\n

The former American President further praised Jonathan for organizing
\na transparent election and easily conceding defeat and handing over to
\nthe opposition, stressing that by doing so Jonathan showed his deep
\ndemocratic commitment.<\/p>\n

While responding, Jonathan stated that his actions while in office
\nwere informed by his belief in a peaceful, transparent and
\npeople-oriented governance, adding that Africa can only move forward
\nthrough democracy and good governance.<\/p>\n

Jonathan also commended President Carter for the exemplary manner he
\nhad in his post-presidential life, adding that he was inspired by
\nCarter\u2019s commitment to causes that advance the path of humanity.<\/p>\n

Jonathan and Carter share a common experience as one term Presidents
\nand have both retired involuntarily from politics while rededicating
\ntheir lives towards making the world a better place.<\/p>\n

They both agreed that peaceful and stable government increase foreign
\ndirect investment and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

The Carter Center is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization
\nfounded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife
\nRosalynn Carter and guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights
\nand the alleviation of human suffering. It seeks to prevent and
\nresolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.<\/p>\n

Former President Jonathan has been visiting many strategic
\npro-democracy institutions where he had been invited to share his
\nexperience in office as a promoter of democracy and advocate of good
\ngovernance in Africa.<\/p>\n

He had so far been hosted by the Presidential Precinct in Virginia,
\nJohn Kennedy School of Government, King Center as well as the Carter
\nCenter.<\/p>\n

While visiting the Presidential Precinct in Charlottesville Virginia,
\nlast week Jonathan assured the international community that African
\nleaders were displaying more commitment to democracy and good
\ngovernance, as a means of engendering sustainable development an
\nimproving the lives of the people.<\/p>\n

He is scheduled to speak a long side with Former US Assistant
\nSecretary of State for Africa Johnnie Carson about elections, peace
\nand democracy at the National Democratic Institute, and Howard
