Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the catholic Archbishop of
\nAbuja, has revealed what President Muhammadu Buhari
\nshould do to stop the deadly Boko Haram insurgency.
\nThe prominent cleric has advised the incumbent
\nNigerian leader to involve the sect in negotiations.
\nOnaiyekan, who is the ex- president of the Christian
\nAssociation of Nigeria spoke in Abuja at the 2015
\nCatholic Television of Nigeria dinner.
\nThe cleric said: \u201c What happened in Mali can happen
\nhere. We do not need people to cause this kind of great
\ncalamity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question is how do you create a situation where
\nsuch things don\u2019t happen?
\n\u201cIt is not easy but you can do all you can to put
\nsecurity apparatus around but you cannot do it in such
\na way that no bad people will move around.
\n\u201cAs a spiritual leader, the solution is first we should
\npray because God can do everything.
\n\u201cSecondly, we should look into our religious messages,
\nbecause many of these terrorists are also calling the
\nname of some religion, calling the name of God.
\n\u201cBut we must find a way of letting them (Boko Haram
\nmembers) know that this is not what God wants.
\n\u201cI personally do not know how to achieve this but I
\nbelieve that a lot still needs to be done.
\n\u201cWhen you (government) reply fire for fire I am afraid it
\ndoes not solve the problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, apart from military tactics there is need for more
\neffort as political discussion, reaching out to people.
\n\u201cEven the terrorists are human beings born of a woman
\nwith feelings. I am sure somebody somewhere can talk
\nto them.\u201d
\nDuring the presidential campaign Buhari pledged not to
\nhold talks with the terrorists if chosen as president.
\nMeanwhile, in a BBC interview several months ago the
\npresident has welcomed talks with Boko Haram
\ninsurgents.<\/p>\n

The last ceasefire agreement between the militants and
\nNigerian government in October 2014 has failed when
\nthe Boko Haram sect rejected that they had agreed to a
\nceasefire with Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s government.
\nNegotiations with the insurgents in recent years have
\nfailed to achieve a peace deal, partly because it has
\nseveral rival factions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
