The Federal Government has countered a claim by the Governor of Kaduna
\nState, Nasir el-Rufai, that the administration of former President
\nGoodluck Jonathan spent N64bn on Independence Day celebrations between
\n2011 and 2015.<\/p>\n

El-Rufai, in a Facebook post on October 1<\/span><\/span>, had hailed President Muhammadu
\nBuhari for allegedly budgeting N70m for this year\u2019s Independence Day
\nanniversary celebration.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Jonathan spent N10bn for Nigeria\u2019s golden jubilee celebration,
\nel-Rufai had said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThis is the APC\/PMB change we voted for. Independence
\nanniversary expenditure for the past five years: 2011 \u2013 N13bn; 2012
\n-N15bn; 2013 \u2013 N14bn; 2014 \u2013 N22bn and 2015 -N70m coming from present
\nadministration.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in contrast to el-Rufai\u2019s claim, the Office of the Secretary to the
\nGovernment of the Federation, in response to a Freedom of Information
\nrequest by BudgIT Nigeria, noted that the Jonathan administration had
\nspent N332.6m for the anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n

It further noted that N1.7bn was spent on the country\u2019s 2010 golden
\njubilee celebration and N138,138,000 on the centenary honours awards in
\n2014.<\/p>\n

In the letter titled \u2018Independence Day celebration\/centenary actual
\nexpenditure from 2010 to 2015,\u2019 the Director, Finance and Accounts, in the
\nPermanent Secretary\u2019s office, Mohammed Garba, said, \u201cWith reference to
\nyour letter dated 2nd October, 2015 on the above subject matter, it is
\nstated as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201c2010 (Golden Jubilee) \u2013 N1.7bn; 2011 (No release of funds); 2012 (53rd
\nIndependence Anniversary) \u2013 N107,600,000; 2013 (53rd Independence
\nAnniversary) \u2013 N45,000,000; 2014\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(54th Independence Anniversary) \u2013
\nN180,000,000; 2015 (55th Independence Anniversary) \u2013 N70,000,000).<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease note that in 2013, Mr President approved the sum of N223,800,000
\nfor the 53rd Independence Celebration, only N45,000,000 was released to
\nthe Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The sum
\nof N138,138,000 was released for centenary honours awards.\u201d<\/p>\n
