Sokoto government said it is partnering with the Federal Government and
\nthe World Bank to develop large scale irrigation scheme in the state.<\/p>\n
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who stated this during a visit by a team
\nfrom the partner agencies to Sokoto Government House, said the scheme,
\ntagged Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMM), will support
\nand improve agricultural productivity through strengthened institutional
\narrangement and improved access to irrigation drainage services.<\/p>\n
He said the scheme will also complement existing major agricultural
\ninitiatives and focuses on improving large-scale public irrigation in
\nSokoto and some selected states in the North.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have so far committed a total of N4.9b for the reclamation of farms in
\nthe Kware Irrigation Scheme. Our government will commit about N460m while
\nour partners will provide the rest. The Kware irrigation scheme, which
\nwill complement TRIMM, involves construction of 175 irrigation\u00a0 water
\nconveyance canals, 120 units of haudraulic structures, 55 kilometres of
\nfeeder roads, five units of primary schools, two primary healthcare
\ncentres and two comminuty markets.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe target is to enhance agricultural growth and production, provide job
\nopportunities, tackle poverty among the populace and also help in
\ndeveloping rice value chain by boosting local rice milling in our state,\u201d
\nTambuwal revealed.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, TRIMM\u2019s Project Coordinator, Engr Peter Manjok said given
\nthe global growing competitiveness in irrigated agricultural production, a
\nwindow of opportunity was opened to help raise income and reduce poverty
\nin the country.<\/p>\n
According to him, the scheme, which will run for seven years, will involve
\nthe transfer of tertiary irrigation and drainage facilities to registered
