For succumbing to resistance on the move to introduce the unpopular N5000 note, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Goodluck Jonathan\u00a0 as another clear indication of the responsiveness of the administration to the wishes of the people.<\/p>\n
While the opposition to N5000 note as proposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) continued to mount, Jonathan rising from a National Economic Council (NEC) gave his backing to its introduction.<\/p>\n
He was however forced to stop the move following a strong opposition from a PDP dominated National Assembly, with the Senate particularly describing the move as illegal as it has flaunted the constitution.<\/p>\n
This is the second time this year that Jonathan has been forced to backtrack on a policy that met popular resistance.<\/p>\n
Recall that his attempt at removing fuel subsidy in January sparked an avalanche of protests in major cities in Nigeria, grounding economic activities across the country for the better part of the month.<\/p>\n
However, a statement by the PDP, which also hints at a relief that the N5000 note policy was dropped said \u201cThe PDP led Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan has a listening ear. \u201cPower to the People\u201d is the slogan of our great party. The President has once more demonstrated that this slogan is inviolable and that under us, power really belongs to the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Chief Olisa Metuh said PDP will continue to anchor its policies and programmes on the needs of the people and will not relent in upholding interest of the nation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe primary concern of the PDP is to ensure the welfare of the generality of Nigerians. We know full well that the opinion of the people in every government policy and action matters a lot if we must achieve this cardinal premise of our manifesto. This is the essence of this decision by the President to reverse the introduction of the N5000.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement commended the National Assembly for being the true representative of the people and stated that the synergy between it and the Executive is a sure way to achieve unimpeded success of the transformation programme<\/p>\n
\u201cThe critical role of the National Assembly as the representatives of the people is tangentially commendable at this at this juncture.<\/p>\n
We pay a deserving tribute to the maturity of the leadership of the National Assembly, the Senate President, Sen.David Mark(GCON) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal\u00a0 (CFR) in meeting with the President and in working together with him to guarantee the best for the nation. There is no better way to express that democracy under our great Party as guardian has come of age.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also commend Nigerians for their constructive criticisms of our programmes. Our Party appreciates this pivotal role of the public in the making of good governance and shall continue to promote it.\u00a0 It is for this reason that we established the Freedom of Information Act so that every Nigerian will have unrestricted access to information and be educated enough to make contribution on how the nation is governed.<\/p>\n
It is also in pursuit of this vision of the founding fathers of the PDP that we opened up the telecommunication industry with the introduction of the GSM so that Nigerians will tap all advantages offered by the traditional and social media to relegate ignorance and engender wide, robust debate on national issues, making fertile ideas available for those in positions of authority.<\/p>\n
