The Human Rights Watch has described the Nigeria Army attack on Shi’ite<\/p>\n
group on December 14 and 14, as \u201cunjustified\u201d and called for an
\nindependent inquiry into the attack.<\/p>\n
Africa Director at Human Rights Watch, Daniel Bekele, said in a report
\nthat the organization interviewed 16 witnesses to the killings and five
\nothers, including local authorities, who said that the Nigerian Army
\nSoldiers fired on the Shiite Muslim members at three locations of the
\ngroup in Zaria.<\/p>\n
He said the army said its confrontation with the Shitte sect members who
\nhad erected a makeshift roadblock near a mosque resulted from an
\nassassination attempt on the army chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai,
\nwhose convoy was passing by, an internal military document seen by Human
\nRights Watch, the army said protesters appeared to be taking up positions
\nnear the back of the convoy.<\/p>\n
Bakele said: \u201cThe Nigerian military\u2019s version of events does not stack up.
\nIt is almost impossible to see how a roadblock by angry young men could
\njustify the killings of hundreds of people. At best it was a brutal
\noverreaction and at worst it was a planned attack on the minority Shiitte
\ngroup.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCharacterizing this terrible carnage against Shiites in Zaria as \u2018a
\nmilitary affair\u2019 is shocking. \u201cPresident Buhari should ensure the
\nmilitary\u2019s appalling track record of serious human rights abuses is halted
\nand does not continue under his term in office.\u201d<\/p>\n
He called on federal government to make the udicial Commission of Inquiry
\nit set up to be sufficiently independent and impartial to hold those
