The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated the people of Bayelsa<\/p>\n
State for their support for its candidate, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson,
\nwhich led to his victory at the just-concluded governorship election in
\nthe state.<\/p>\n
The PDP however said the victory is painful because of the number of those
\nthat were killed.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s painful that this victory has come with so much pain because we lost
\ndear ones. Those who died are our brothers. So many are yet in the
\nhospitals nursing life threatening injuries because our opponents wanted
\nto win at all cost. We wish to express our deepest condolences once again
\nand to assure them that their death will not be in vain”, it stated.<\/p>\n
The party’s position was contained in a statement by its Director of
\nPublicity, Restoration Campaign Organisation, Jonathan Obuebite, shortly
\nafter the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the
\nincumbent governor winner.<\/p>\n
The PDP thanked the people for renewing Dickson\u2019s mandate for another
\nfour-years, attributing it to the \u201cresilience and uncommon courage\u201d of the
\npeople.<\/p>\n
Obuebite stated in particular that the victory was important because it
\ncame the way of the PDP even in the face of intimidation, tyranny, threats
\nand violent attacks, but however, observed that “despite the challenges,
\ndemocracy won.”<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cWe want to use this opportunity to sincerely thank all Bayelsans
\nfor their doggedness and patriotism because even in the face of such
\nterrible intimidation and violence decided, out of their own volition,
\nthey came out to re-elect and return the Countryman Governor to office for
\nthe next four years. We are grateful for your remarkable decision as
\nexpected in a democracy.<\/p>\n
“The people have spoken and we are indeed grateful. It\u2019s your victory, you
\nthe good people of Bayelsa State. Without doubt, a new dawn is here.
\nBayelsans, through their uncommon courage have defeated tyranny and
\noppression by voting for the continuation of the restoration of our
\ndignity and pride as amply demonstrated through their votes.”<\/p>\n
The RCO stated that the victory was a sweet one which signposts the end of
\nan era of a political class whose stock in trade was \u201cviolence,
\nbrigandage, militancy and bloodletting as the only means of accessing
\npower.”<\/p>\n
He said never again will Bayelsa State harbor criminals and rogue elements
\nas contestants for power.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing forward, the Bayelsa political space will only be for those who
\nhave the intellectual rigour to trade their fine ideas in exchange for
\nvotes, not bullets. Our society must groom new set of leaders who will
\nonly access power through their superior ideas to regenerate society
\nrather than through the barrel of the gun”, he stated.<\/p>\n
Obuebite condemned the sheer scale of violence and mayhem that
\ncharacterized the 2015 governorship election in BayelsaState, saying it
\nwill go down in history as one with the highest record of casualties.<\/p>\n
While calling for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the
\nreported killings, the PDP condoled with the families of those who lost
