{"id":45711,"date":"2016-01-19T16:11:34","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T15:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=45711"},"modified":"2016-01-19T16:11:34","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T15:11:34","slug":"activating-the-koboko-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/articles-opinions\/activating-the-koboko-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Activating The Koboko Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">By <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Adekoya<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Boladale<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Apart from institutional leakages where <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">deliberate<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">non-<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">impleme<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ntation<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">policies has continued to lead to porosity of public funds<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> braze greed of unpatriotic public servants <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">sheer lust to climb the ladder of societal superiority <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">are elements that have continued to rekindle the flames of corruption in Africa<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Beyond these elements however, one <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">behavioral attitude <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">which has continued to instill a desire for sharp practices, cov<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">etousness and outright fraud from generations to<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> generations is the unholy glorification of looters and elevation of individuals who have amassed unexplainable wealth <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">to the pinnacle of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Supreme Being<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> in our society.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We live in a shameful world; cruel and unfair;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">world that neither encourages <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">hard work<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, truthfulness nor reward perseverance and conten<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">tment. There is only one race across this type of world, who do not outperform each other in terms of development or outdo one another in the area of innovation or advancement, but simply earn a bragging right where the poles of wealthy Kinsmen are stuck side by side in a contest of wealth comparison. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Few days ago, I was at a place in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Abuja<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">jejely<\/span><\/i><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">minding my own business, I overheard an argument between two friends. The man on my right (I later got to know) is a Kinsman of the immediate past 8 years Senate President of Nigeria and sixteen years Senator, David Mark, while the one on my left hails from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kano<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> State. I was not privileged to the beginning of their discussion, but at the time my mind became consci<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ous of their argument, the bone of contention was \u2018Who is the richer<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> between David Mark and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rabiu<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kwankaso<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (the erstwhile Governor of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kano<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> State)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">?\u2019 I watched painstakingly how two grown men who obviously have never had any encounter with either of the two individuals nearly engaged in a fist fight on a baseless point of argument. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Our society does not only harbor corruption, it also encourages same and more than often pushes people into it. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Today, President <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Buhari<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> has renewed the long abandoned war against corruption, an exercise which revelations have left Nigerians gasping for breath and some cursing their maker for being partial in sharing opportunities. But while the battle against corruption reigns, the needed torch to effectively cleanse our country of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">this cankerworm is to stop encouraging it. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rotimi<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Amaechi<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> was right when he said that &#8220;politicians continue to steal because the people have failed to learn the skill to stone.&#8221; An ordinary ward councilor is expected to use his office or \u2018chance\u2019 as they call it, to amass enough wealth for his generations yet unborn. God save you if you are a local council Chairman and you are seen taking public transport after office or still living in a rented apartment. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you are not disowned by family members, neighbors and friends will easily conclude you are cursed.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Some say it is a cultural deficiency brewed from our tradition of respect and idolization <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of elders in our society,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> but one question I keep asking <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">proponents <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of such schools of thought is \u2018Of what use has this long held tradition <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">be to our development<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">?&#8217;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For Nigeria to truly change, it is beyond the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Buharis<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> of this world. Nigerians need to unlearn the ridiculous glorification of criminals and idolization of common thieves who we have bestowed with the most reverend titles our society has to offer. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The criteria for elevation of status in our society must go beyond mere luxuries and intimidating wealth. No man, no matter how highly placed deserves to be treated as a Supreme Lord. Respect must be earned on the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">platter<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> of dignity, wisdom, truth and sincere humanity. And while we are at this, we should go a step further to learn the act of horsewhipping. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Bible says in Proverbs 22:15 \u2018Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him\u2019. Same also is greed, corruption, and covetousness bound in the heart of politicians and public office holders, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and the only antidote that stands the test of time is the rod. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Nigeria will be better-off when we all equip ourselves with horsewhips at public functions and events, at court premises and hearing, and at media meetings and get-<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">togethers<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. We can invoke the change we seek in the heart of our politicians when we show actions. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Just close your eyes and imagine the beauty of seeing people whipping <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Oli<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">sa<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Metuh<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> as he leaves the court premises, imagine <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sambo<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Dasuki<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> being lashed by friends and foes instead of adoring his devilish act. Imagine Raymond <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Dokpesi<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> being made to stoop to receive his share <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of \u2018don\u2019t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> be greedy\u2019.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> I<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">f disgracing and flogging commonsense into politicians will make Nigeria better, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">then<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> that we must do. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While we stand beside them, trigger-ready to swing back and forth our arms, let us adopt a uniform phrase in that sweaty moment.
