Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor<\/p>\n
Mahmood Yakubu, has said that INEC planned to further enhance the<\/p>\n
electoral process by introducing more technology in the collation and<\/p>\n
transmission of election results in order to make the process speedy, more<\/p>\n
accurate and technology-driven.<\/p>\n

He said the contribution of technology in the 2015 general elections,<\/p>\n
adjudged as the best in the history of Nigeria, could not be over<\/p>\n
emphasized, hence the Commission was poised to consolidate on its<\/p>\n
technological gains.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman made the disclosure yesterday at the quarterly<\/p>\n
Commission meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), at the<\/p>\n
Commission\u2019s headquarters, Abuja.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThis Commission will not experiment. It will rather consolidate.<\/p>\n
Technology has come to stay.\u00a0 Not only will the Permanent Voter Cards<\/p>\n
(PVCs) and the Smart Card Readers remain, but we are going to go a step<\/p>\n
higher to see if we can also deploy technology for collation and<\/p>\n
transmission of results so that we make the processes between the<\/p>\n
conclusion of elections at the Polling Units, the counting and final tally<\/p>\n
at the Collation Centre speedy and more accurate and technology driven,\u201d<\/p>\n
he disclosed.<\/p>\n

He explained that the Commission was saddled with the responsibility of<\/p>\n
conducting about 82 Court ordered elections within the first quarter of<\/p>\n
2016. Professor Mahmood implored the RECs to work with the Commission in<\/p>\n
ensuring that it delivered on its core mandate of conducting free, fair<\/p>\n
and credible elections.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Said he: \u201cwe need to put our hands together with RECs and other<\/p>\n
stakeholders to see how we respond immediately to the decisions of the<\/p>\n
courts to conduct these elections because we have a maximum of 90 days<\/p>\n
within which to do so\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman further explained that apart from the 82 annulled<\/p>\n
elections, the Appeal Court had as at last week upturned 15 elections and<\/p>\n
ordered INEC to issue Certificates of Return to the rightful winners, to<\/p>\n
which he said the Commission had compiled.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Some of the issues discussed at the meeting include: Continuous Voter<\/p>\n
Registration (CVR), elections conducted so far by the Commission under<\/p>\n
Professor Yakubu\u2019s watch, the Smart Card Reader, violence in elections,<\/p>\n
undistributed PVCs and staff welfare.<\/p>\n
