The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday<\/span><\/span> opened its case
\nwith two witnesses against the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples
\nDemocratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, in the charges of money laundering
\ninvolving the sum of N400m which he allegedly collected from the Office of
\nthe National Security Adviser in November 2014.<\/p>\n

The trial commenced before a Federal High Court in Abuja after the trial
\njudge, Justice Okon Abang, overruled objection by Metuh\u2019s lead counsel,
\nMr. Onyechi Ikpeazu(SAN) to adjourn the trial.<\/p>\n

Ikpeazu also informed the judge on Monday<\/span><\/span> that since Metuh had been unable
\nto meet the bail conditions granted him on January 16, the defence had
\nfiled an application for variation of the terms.<\/p>\n

He urged the court to adjourn the proceedings as the inability of his
\nclient to meet the bail conditions had adverse effect on his preparation
\nfor the defence.<\/p>\n

The prosecution led by Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, opposed the application for
\nadjournment and his objection was upheld by the judge.<\/p>\n

Tahir then proceeded to open the prosecution\u2019s case on Monday<\/span><\/span> with the
\ntestimony of an employee of Asset and Resource Management Company Limited,
\nNneka Ararume, who narrated how he collected a total sum of $2m cash from
\nMetuh at his house in Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja.<\/p>\n

Ararume who described her position with the company as Wealth Manager,
\nsaid the instruction given to her by Metuh was that the money should be
\ninvested.
\nShe explained further that she went ahead to change the money to its naira
\nequivalent through two bureau de change operators she engaged.<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cHe gave me the sum of $2m in $100 bills. It was taken to bureau
\nde change operators who would then transfer the money to ARM. From there
\n(Metuh\u2019s house) I proceeded to Mr. Sie Iyenome\u2019s office at Wuse 2 where I
\ngave him the sum of $1m.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also invited Mr. Kabir Mohammed and I also gave him the sum of $1m to
\ntransfer the naira equivalent in favour of Destra Investment Limited.
\nLater on the same day, December 2, 2014, Mr. Kabir and Mr. Sie Iyenome
\nconfirmed the receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prosecution also called Iyenome as its second prosecution witness, who
\nalso narrated how he changed the $1m to its naira equivalent and paid it
\nto ARM.<\/p>\n

Both witnesses were cross-examined by the defence counsel.
\nTrial has been adjourned till tomorrow<\/span><\/span> for the prosecution to call more
\nwitnesses.
