President Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0 Thursday in London called on the global<\/p>\n
community to give greater support\u00a0 to countries whose populace are
\nsuffering humanitarian crises caused by terrorism and civil strife.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Supporting Syria and the Region conference in the British
\ncapital, President Buhari said that\u00a0 without collective support and
\nassistance from all well-meaning countries, companies and organisations,
\nthe humanitarian catastrophe\u00a0 affecting millions of people in countries
\nlike Nigeria and Syria cannot be successfully addressed.<\/p>\n
The President noted that the increasingly complex and inter-connected
\nsecurity challenges faced by the global community necessitate increased
\ninternational cooperation in pursuit of effective solutions.<\/p>\n
President Buhari strongly condemned the continuing violence by terrorists
\nagainst innocent civilians, abuse of human rights and destruction of
\npublic and private assets and cultural heritages in Nigeria, Syria and
\nother countries of the world.<\/p>\n
He told the gathering that having experienced civil war and terrorist
\ninsurgency, Nigeria understands the pains inflicted on the people of Syria
\nand the hardship that innocent civilians suffer in the hands of misguided
\nelements.<\/p>\n
President Buhari called on all parties involved in the Syrian conflict to
\nseek a peaceful resolution, saying that only a political solution could
\nbring the ongoing tragedy in the country to an end.<\/p>\n
Concluding his address, President Buhari expressed Nigeria’s immense
\nsympathy for the people of Syria.<\/p>\n
“We all stand in solidarity with them. Despite the magnitude of our own
\nchallenges and the increasing stress on our economy, I reaffirm our
\nGovernment’s commitment to support and assist the war-affected people of
\nSyria,” he said.<\/p>\n
Participants in the conference included the British Prime Minister, Mr.
\nDavid Cameron, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, the Secretary-General
\nof the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Prime
\nMinister Erna Solberg of Norway and the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah
\nAl-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.<\/p>\n
Others were the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross,
\nMr. Peter Maurer, the President of the World Bank, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, the
\nAdministrator of the United Nations Development Programme, Helen Clark and
