\nPressure from some Nigerian elites to slow down the ongoing fight against
\ngraft would not deter the Buhari presidency from ridding the country from
\nthe problem of corruption, according to Vice President Prof. Yemi
\nOsinbajo.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe get regular messages from some Nigerian elites saying cool down,\u201d the
\nVice President disclosed regarding pressures on the presidency to relent
\nin the anti-corruption fight, during a meeting today in his office with a
\ndelegation from the Moslem Congress of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a very strange morality that some of those people have, very
\ncomplicated but cutting across all tribes and religious differences,\u201d he
\nnoted. However he observed encouragingly that the masses of the Nigerian
\npeople on the contrary have a clearer understanding of right and wrong.
\nAccording to him, \u201cthe masses don\u2019t have that problem.”<\/p>\n
Although some elites are saying \u201cit is not a big deal,\u201d and that
\ngovernment should merely ask the looters of the commonwealth of the nation
\nto return the money and go, Prof. Osinbajo expressed gladness that “a new
\ntribe of Nigerians who would not compromise their values but would
\nmaintain a sense of right and wrong is now emerging”.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe man on the street is very clear, so whatever some of these elites
\nsay, we shall keep our focus on the masses who voted for us,\u201d the Vice
\nPresident declared. He said it is simply unacceptable that in the last 16
\nyears there is not a single federal government completed road project, not
\nto even talk of rail. \u201cThe reason is corruption,\u201d he asserts, adding that
\nthe cost of projects are often inflated as people entrusted with public
\ntrust struggle to enrich themselves at the expense of the people.<\/p>\n
He said it was the same inordinate desire for enrichment that explains why
\nmoney meant to procure arms were being distributed among persons at a time
\nwhen the territorial integrity of the nation was being attacked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe insurgency has gone on for 6 years because government could not
\nadequately equip the military,\u201d he stated<\/p>\n
But the Vice President assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari
\nand himself would not relent. He said the president and himself have no
\nother agenda but \u201cthe progress of this country.”<\/p>\n
Continuing, he reassured that \u201cMr. President and I are extremely focussed
\non what we need to do. We will focus on critical things, infrastructure
\nand social investments.”<\/p>\n
Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation from the Moslem Congress of
\nNigeria, Imam Abdulahi Shuaib conveyed the support of the organization to
\nthe government in its programmes including anti-corruption, and expressed
\nreadiness to offer assistance. According to him, \u201cwe are thankful that our
\ncandidates of choice in the election emerged.\u201d He said the choice of the
\nPresident and Vice President were made by God Himself during last year\u2019s
\npresidential election.
\nThe Vice President also received delegations from the Nigeria Society of
\nEngineers, NSE and the Facility for Oil Sector Transparency Reform,
\nFOSTER, a group composed of NGOs involved in different issues in the Niger
\nDelta areas.<\/p>\n
At his courtesy meeting with the NSE, Prof Osinbajo praised the engineers
\nand highlighted the importance of the profession in national development.
\n\u201cThere is no question at all that engineers are central to the development
\nof the society,\u201d he noted. The NSE delegation was led by its President,
\nEngineer Otis Anyaeji.<\/p>\n
Speaking earlier while receiving FOSTER, the Vice President restated the
\ngovernment\u2019s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta. He also
\ncommended the group for coming together to develop a common framework to
\nsupport the process of development in the area. The group which said it
\nadopted a common framework in order to avoid duplication was led by Mr.
\nRichard Oshowole.<\/p>\n
