Traditional rulers in the country should raise a strong voice of
\ncondemnation against those who have stolen public funds and engaged in
\ncorruption capable of crippling the country, the Vice President, Prof.
\nYemi Osinbajo, SAN, has said.<\/p>\n
Meeting with a group of traditional rulers and leaders from Remo-Land,
\nOgun State, the Vice President said \u201cas leaders we must condemn corruption
\nin the strongest terms\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cI think it\u2019s right that we condemn corruption in strong
\nterms, more so that traditional rulers do not belong to any political
\nparty. The kind of corruption we experienced in the recent past is the
\nkind that in any other part of the world it would be considered as a crime
\nagainst humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
He noted that the kind of corruption that has been observed in the country
\nis one for which people should be ashamed.<\/p>\n
While the nation is fighting a war, he lamented, some people were stealing
\nthe money, the resources meant to provide the weapons.\u00a0 \u201cWhat the leaders
\ndid in the past few years is very shameful,\u201d Prof. Osinbajo emphasized.<\/p>\n
Continuing, he said \u201ccorruption is such a terrible thing and I don\u2019t think
\nit is a matter of politics. I think it\u2019s one thing everybody should be
\nashamed of, if you consider what the leaders of this country had done.\u201d He
\nadded that such corruption can completely cripple the nation.<\/p>\n
Vice President Osinbajo told the delegation led by Akarigbo of Remo-Land ,
\nOba (Dr) Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo, that the Buhari administration is fully
\ncommitted to the anti-corruption crusade and \u201cgoing forward, the
\ndetermination of this government is to ensure that people know that
\ncorruption has consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the Vice President, \u201cwe will not only hold those who have
\nserved to account, but also hold ourselves to account.”\u00a0 He said this is
\nhow to avoid the Hobbesian state of nature where life is \u201cpoor, nasty,
\nbrutish and short.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stating that the anti-corruption fight is hinged on transparency, he
\nexplained that \u201cwe are trying to put in place a system that ensures that
\nthere is consequence if you do wrong. So that the people you serve, very
\npoor are not treated like animals\u201d.<\/p>\n
He further stated that \u201cI think that one of the major problems that we
\nhave faced is just that the level of corruption is high. The fact is that
\nwhen you look at what has happened, the truth is stranger than fiction.
\nWhen you look at the facts and figures, it doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier in his remarks, the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Michael Sonariwo
\ncommended the government of President MuhammaduBuhari for its
\nanti-corruption policies.<\/p>\n
Also, the Vice President met a delegation from the Nigerian Association
\nfor Energy Economics (NAEE) today in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Prof.
\nYemi Osinbajo said experts in the energy, oil and gas sectors should
\ncontribute their expertise in the sector if the sector would overcome all
\nits challenges.<\/p>\n
Prof. Osinbajo expressed that it is strategic for professionals as well as
\nmembers of the Energy Economics to always join in the energy debate and
\nrender their expert advice to government, adding that President Buhari\u2019s
\nadministration is transparent and open and this would also make government
\nto be accountable.<\/p>\n
Earlier, leader of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics, Prof.
\nWumi Iledare, who is also a Professor of Petroleum Economics at the
\nEmerald Energy Institute, University of Port Harcourt, said he was in the
\nState House to invite the\u00a0 Vice President as Special Guest to the 9th
\nNAEE\/IAEE International Conference, \u201cEnergizing Emerging Economics: The
